The meaning of Sanskrit word "Yoga" is union,  addition. The word has originated in the spiritual context and implies the union of an individual self with the absolute, eternal self. In simple terms, the philosophy of Yoga teaches us that a life when lived as per the will and disciplines of the Supreme Creator becomes a life united with his supreme powers. The experimental science of Yoga, as recorded by the revered Rishi Patanjali is known as Ashtang Yoga (“ashta” - eight; “anga” - limbs or branches) because it consists of eight components: Yam, Niyam, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhayan and Samadhi. The first four have a direct bearing on physical and mental health, the later successfully pertaining to emotional transmutation and spiritual upliftment. Sincere adoption of this teaching brings health, vigour and joy in life, leading to the divine evolution.  Rishis, the Indian Sages of Vedic times, had discovered the supreme science of Yoga and taught practical ways for cultivation of complete well-being. They devised the methods to awaken unlimited potentials of human life, by means of Yoga. The word "Yoga" has become a familiar term across the globe, plethora of so-called Yoga schools flourish, but people at large are ignorant of the real meaning and purpose of Yoga, regarding it mostly as a mere "package" of physical exercises. No doubt the physical exercises (asanas) derived from the Ashtang Yoga are most natural and effective means of physical fitness, but they are only a part of a more profound Yoga system that encompasses ALL aspects of life. What makes the real difference and bestows great benefits is to practice the asanas along with understanding the philosophy of Yoga with determined endeavor to adopt it in life wholly.
