Vice President of Standards                                                                                      

Yoga Alliance (YA) is the independent not-for-profit member organization that advances the development and livelihood of yoga professionals and advocates for safety and accessibility in yoga. A related public charity, the Yoga Alliance Foundation (YAF), is an emerging field leader in yoga-based social impact.

Together, these two organizations support yoga teachers to more fully grow into their role as leaders in their communities. YA supports yoga teachers’ growth as professionals, giving them tools to effectively bring yoga into their communities. YAF develops vehicles for direct social impact, such as programs that enable teachers to serve within communities that have typically been excluded from yoga.

YA and YAF were founded to promote unity in yoga – so that all lineages, traditions and yoga organizations may thrive and all students may benefit from the gifts of yoga in the way that suits their needs best. We do this work so that the gifts of yoga can be offered effectively to more people.

The Vice President of Standards will oversee the implementation and adoption of, and accountability to, updated industry-wide credentialing standards and related efforts in ethics, diversity, professionalism and conscious evolution in yoga teaching. In doing so, and working in partnership with the senior leadership team, the VP of Standards will have broad responsibilities to execute a plan to evolve, communicate, implement and maintain standards and will manage two existing teams that support credentialing of yoga teachers and teacher training programs, and oversight of accountability.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide senior leadership in the development and implementation of revised standards according to the YA strategy and operational plans
  • Build an inclusive and non-coercive culture that meets the needs of YA members, partners, regulators and, ultimately, yoga students so that YA’s standards are broadly accepted and adopted
  • Act as one key listener and dialogue facilitator to yoga teachers, schools and students to ensure YA is serving the highest needs of our constituents to advance the field and promote teacher livelihood and not imposing overly burdensome or confusing standards on the industry
  • Serve as a visible spokesperson and champion for YA Standards with key stakeholders. Serve as an expert speaker on teaching standards at conferences and retreats, as needed
  • Support the President & CEO to ensure YA delivers on its commitments
  • Build and support a high-performing team of experts in YA standards and project management to support YA’s strategic plan. Motivate and support career development of team members
  • Ensure consistency across application of YA standards and work in collaboration with outside partners to support implementation of YA standards in a variety of settings
  • Ensure that all projects and partnerships achieve results on time and within budget
  • Establish and maintain new critical partnerships. Build relationships with leadership across external stakeholder organizations as well as related industries
  • Support organizational revenue through increased membership, business development, and sales, as necessary, to ensure the sustainability of the YA standards
  • Ensure integration of standards efforts with the YA Educational programs
  • Actively participate as a member of YA’s leadership team, including providing clear, accurate, and timely information; listening attentively; engaging other leadership team members and supporting their projects; promoting inter-departmental collaboration; and supporting full execution of the organization’s strategic plan in all departments
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting of departmental hours; billing (A/P and A/R); and results on strategic plan goals
  • Additional duties as assigned

Preferred Qualifications:

The VP of Standards plays a critical leadership role within Yoga Alliance and will require a unique combination of skills in the areas of strategy, project management, communications (oral and written), plus specific topic expertise. This person will have experience in the following areas:
  • Demonstrated experience in leading change management efforts in complex not-for-profit/industry-wide environments, while incorporating culture and values; subject matter expert on continuing education of yoga teachers preferred
  • Excellent project management capabilities, demonstrated by at least 5-7 years’ experience managing or leading teams at a professional association, not-for-profit, foundation, academic institution, management consulting firm, political campaign, or investment firm
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing yoga and social impact through yoga through own working experience or volunteer activities
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, in particular team building, listening, and facilitation skills
  • Ability to put personal beliefs and opinions aside in service to organizational and field needs
  • Exceptional flair for strategic thinking
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Strong analytic skills with a track record of solving complex problems
  • Capacity to work successfully in a startup organization or organizational turnaround initiative
  • Strong relationship builder and communicator with experience leading diverse work teams, developing an organization-wide strategy for program excellence, engaging community partners, and partnering with a senior leadership team and board of directors
  • Demonstrated commitment to integrity and excellence in their work, and experience leading others to new levels of effectiveness and programmatic impact
  • Ability to work under pressure and remain flexible and adaptable as needs and priorities change
  • Impeccable assertiveness, tact, and diplomacy in handling confidential and sensitive issues
  • Exemplary service ethic
  • Sense of humor, ability to have fun, interest in building a strong culture and high performing team
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced professional degree preferred

Controller

The Controller will report directly to the Director of Finance and will be responsible for day to day accounting functions (G/L, A/P, A/R and Payroll); developing financial reports for the use of the Executive Management Team, and program staff; cash management; and maintaining financial systems and internal controls. The Controller supervises the Senior Accountant and Staff Accountant. The ideal candidate will have a degree in Accounting; possess good communication, and organizational skills, strong ERP skills and Excel skills and have experience working in a non-profit environment and with managing staff. The position is based in Arlington, VA.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for month-end closing and financial statement preparation and analysis in an accurate and timely manner
  • Management of accounting operations, to include G/L, A/R, A/P and Payroll
  • Cash management and bank reconciliations
  • Work with external auditors on annual financial audits and 990s
  • Direct the finance department’s overall policy and procedure manual
  • Manage all accounting functions to ensure proper maintenance of systems and appropriate internal controls
  • Manage and oversee all financial systems to ensure timely, accurate and high quality data
  • Work closely and transparently with all external partners including audit firm, banking institutions, financial and other consultants, as well as vendors
  • Maintain proper financial reporting and general ledger administration
  • Review and submit bi-weekly payroll
  • This is a supervisory role with two direct reports
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:

The Controller plays a critical leadership role within Yoga Alliance and will require a unique combination of skills in the areas of strategy, project management, communications (oral and written), plus specific topic expertise. This person will have experience in the following areas:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from an accredited school
  • At least 5 years in a senior accounting or finance position
  • CPA designation
  • Experience managing multiple staff
  • Advanced user of Excel
  • Proficient in Sage Intacct Cloud Accounting
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills; must be able to interact and communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization
  • Innovative thinker, with a track record for problem solving and developing action plans and managing output
  • Must be able to adapt to a dynamic and growth-oriented culture and work well in a team environment
  • Ability to make decisions in a changing environment and anticipate future needs
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills
  • Previous work experience in a non-profit organization is desired
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail
  • Payroll experience preferred

Director, People + Culture

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director, People + Culture is a partner in operationalizing the strategic plan of the CEO, institutionalizing best practices and upholding the organization’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. The Director, People + Culture is an innovative and transformational HR generalist who works collaboratively in carrying out the full range of HR functions, including compensation and benefits, talent acquisition and retention, training and development, employee relations, performance management, policy development and implementation, HR data management, and regulatory compliance.

The Director, People + Culture must be skilled at addressing issues in a calm and confident manner and able to develop and implement appropriate solutions that support institutional leadership goals and organizational decision-making policies to strengthen work relationships, support organizational priorities and meet regulatory requirements. It is particularly important that this individual be someone who can build consensus around issues of diversity and inclusion and have experience implementing such practices into organizations. In addition, the Director, People + Culture must be an excellent communicator, both verbally and in writing, a roll-up-your-sleeves manager, have the highest integrity, and have a sense of humor and grace under pressure. Further, the ideal candidate will be a results-driven professional with at least 10 years of relevant experience.

Responsibilities (including, but not limited to):

  • Provide strategic human resources direction and ensure the effective execution of all aspects of human resources management, including compensation and benefits, compliance with federal and state employment laws, talent management, training and development, performance management, recruitment, employee retention, and HR data management and reporting metrics
  • With the CEO and COO, assess YA/YAF’s human resource needs and oversee the refinement and implementation of organization-wide systems and structures to ensure that YA/YAF is an employer of choice
  • Respond to staff needs and ensure effective staff are recruited, retained, and developed
  • Work closely with organizational leadership and managers to maintain a positive work environment and culture, and help facilitate the resolution of interpersonal issues
  • Foster a trusting environment which is characterized by transparency, active listening, and direct communication
  • Collaborate closely with the senior management team to ensure that all Human Resources initiatives are aligned with the strategic direction and goals of the organization
  • Systematize employee training and development, performance management, risk management, decision-making policy, conflict resolution and organizational development across YA/YAF
  • Build a positive culture based to ensure the YA/YAF has a deeply engaged employee population
  • Maintains responsibility for EDI’s compliance with federal, state and local laws pertaining to all employment related matters including but not limited to ACA, ADA, COBRA, ERISA, FLSA, FMLA, HIPAA, IRCA and OSHA
  • Maintains knowledge of industry trends and employment legislation to ensure company compliance
  • Responsible for salary, wage, and benefits administration, including an annual comparative analysis. Conducts offers to candidates and works with hiring managers and consulting partners to ensure consistency. Acts as liaison between employee and insurance providers to resolve benefit related problems and ensure effective utilization of plans and positive employee relations
  • Advises senior management on staff issues, concerns and feedback
  • Additional HR duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Minimum seven years’ experience in a senior HR leadership role
  • Excellent HR generalist skills, including the capacity to attract, develop, inspire, and retain staff
  • Experience implementing diversity and inclusion programs and initiatives
  • Knowledge of technology solutions to HR challenges as well as familiarity with the unique solutions and challenges that new technology brings to organizations and an understanding of how talent management will be affected by a technologically enhanced workplace
  • Highly proactive style of work, with a demonstrated track record of developing innovative approaches
  • Successful track record of driving organizational and culture change and transformation
  • Experience communicating, partnering and collaborating with staff at all levels in a manner that is flexible, supportive and encourages accountability
  • Effective and persuasive communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal, with ability to appreciate various viewpoints, share relevant information in a timely manner, and maintain a high level of professionalism
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a partnership with and develop a strong leadership team and a committed staff with high standards and expectations
  • Prior experience assessing organizational needs and developing and implementing HR policies, systems and processes
  • Keen analytical and problem-solving skills that enable sound strategic decision making; resourcefulness in setting priorities, sound judgment and a sense of balance
  • Strong interpersonal and conflict resolutions skills along with emotional intelligence, a positive outlook and good sense of humor
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and build trust among staff at all levels
  • Ability to work under pressure and remain flexible and adaptable as needs and priorities change
  • Demonstrated commitment to YA/YAF’s mission and/or core values
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field; advanced degree preferred
