Yoga Alliance (YA) is the independent member organization that advances the development of yoga professionals and advocates for safety and accessibility in yoga. A related public charity, the Yoga Alliance Foundation (YAF), is an emerging field leader in yoga-based social impact.

Together, these two organizations support yoga teachers to more fully grow into their role as leaders in their communities. YA supports yoga teachers’ growth as professionals, giving them tools to effectively bring yoga into their communities. YAF develops vehicles for direct social impact, such as programs that enable teachers to serve within communities that have typically been excluded from yoga.

YA and YAF were founded to promote unity in yoga – so that all lineages, traditions and yoga organizations may thrive and all students may benefit from the gifts of yoga in the way that suits their needs best. We do this work so that the gifts of yoga can be offered effectively to more people.

The Director of Education will plan and implement a comprehensive strategy for member and public education that aligns with and promotes YA’s vision and mission, offers inspiring and engaging content that showcases the breadth of yoga and yoga teaching, and provides value to membership/would be attractive to potential new members. The candidate will be responsible for all member and public education program development, developing content that supports Yoga Alliance members in elevating their teaching (including continuing education) and finds new ways to engage the public with yoga, and is delivered through creative and appealing mediums and vehicles. The candidate will be responsible for program evaluation and growth, curriculum development and providing continuing education to our members, and managing a small project management/production team.


Responsibilities

  • Leads development of a comprehensive education program that supports YA’s approved vision, mission, and strategy, offers inspiring and engaging content that showcases the breadth of yoga and yoga teaching, and provides value to membership/would be attractive to potential new members
  • Formulates and recommends programs, goals and objectives for education programs
  • Creates, maintains, and evaluates educational content that supports internal and external stakeholders’ needs
  • Actively participates as a member of YA’s leadership team, including providing clear, accurate, and timely information to the CEO + COO; listening attentively; engaging other leadership team members and supporting their projects; promoting inter-departmental collaboration; and supporting full execution of the organization’s strategic plan in all departments
  • Acts as a liaison to other departments regarding education products and the education channel’s platform to elevate issues and subject matters
  • Manages, trains and develops education team
  • Works closely with MarComm which communicates education department initiatives
  • Reviews, evaluates and reports on education programs
  • Manages annual department budget and reviews monthly budget reports
  • Ensures quality control of education program products and deliverables
  • Manages and evaluates vendors and consultants as they relate to education services
  • Additional duties as assigned

Preferred Qualifications:

The Director of Education plays a critical leadership role within Yoga Alliance and will require a unique combination of skills in the areas of communications (oral, written, and visual), strategy, plus specific educational topic expertise. This person will have the following qualifications:

  • Subject matter expert on the field of yoga and/or yoga teaching
  • Minimum of eight years’ progressive professional responsibility for management and administration of comprehensive public/member education programs
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing yoga and social impact through yoga through own working experience or volunteer activities; passion for doing good in the world
  • Leadership experience in the field of continuing education and CE credits
  • Track record of developing and fostering long-standing, mutually beneficial relationships with stakeholders (education providers, thought leaders, and partners)
  • Demonstrated commitment to integrity and excellence in their work, excitement to lead, and experience leading a team to new levels of effectiveness and programmatic impact
  • Ability to work under pressure and remain flexible and adaptable as needs and priorities change
  • Exceptional flair for strategic thinking
  • Exceptional interpersonal, team building, listening, and facilitation skills; ability to work with senior management effectively
  • Prior experience in a high-performing non-profit or association, or a startup organization
  • Experience developing learning platforms and extensive knowledge of industry best practices for online and blended learning
  • Strong oral, written, and visual communication skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in education or closely related field

The Credentialing Advisor is responsible for assessing and making registration determinations for Registered Yoga School (RYS) applications in order for them to receive the Yoga Alliance credential. This includes evaluating school applications to ensure they are in compliance with Yoga Alliance Standards and serving as an educational resource to current and prospective members. The Credentialing Advisor is responsible for initiating and maintaining effective member service care, including timely correspondence with co-workers and applicants.


Responsibilities:

  • Rigorously assess yoga school applications for adherence to the Yoga Alliance Standards required to meet Yoga Alliance credential eligibility
  • Maintain professional relationships with applicants during and after the application process
  • Respond in a timely manner to Credentialing email and phone inbox, consulting, as needed, with Member Services department to provide high level service and coordinated response across areas
  • Consult with Accountability department regarding grievance and compliance issues with applicants
  • Support organizational priorities as well as support department specific projects
  • Support the IT department with user experience testing as needed
  • Support Standards and Credentialing Manager in on-boarding new Credentialing staff
  • Additional responsibilities as requested by Credentialing and Yoga Alliance leadership
  • Coach fellow IT staff in project management processes, methods, and best practices to accelerate the effectiveness of initiatives

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Desire to support the yoga community, has an appreciation of yoga, and/or has completed yoga trainings and/or yoga education courses
  • Superior interpersonal skills
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • A strong understanding of credentialing process and standards
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Solid computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Ability to effectively time-manage and consistently meet individual and departmental goals
  • Previous experience in a customer service environment a plus

The Opportunity:

Reporting to Yoga Alliance’s Acting President and Chief Executive Officer (C.E.O), the Managing Director (M.D.) of the Yoga Alliance Foundation will translate the organization’s vision into a portfolio of programs that amplifies opportunities for yoga to transform and heal.

This is an outstanding opportunity for a leader to: identify promising community programs; develop grantmaking approaches that support program expansion and scale; measure outcomes; incorporate learning into future initiatives; and engage new donors. Humble, collaborative, and disciplined, the M.D. must bring a track record building partnerships that have led to equity and access in marginalized communities.

Detailed responsibilities:

  • Partner with the Acting President and C.E.O. to develop approaches that leverage YAF’s currently available investments ($9M+) and provide a strong platform that will encourage new contributions to expand this work. Support the Acting President and C.E.O.’s strategic engagement with an impact- focused YA board committee;
  • Identify community-based partners that skillfully implement authentic, inclusive and measurable health and wellness programs;
  • Identify and build deep relationships that generate funding for program initiatives and pilots;
  • Model Yoga Alliance/Yoga Alliance Foundation’s core values – and genuine service -- in all interactions;
  • Test, measure and iterate approaches that measurably expand programs and/or seek to fundamentally change the ability to scale yoga’s service to marginalized communities;
  • Develop, and apply, disciplined and transparent grantmaking criteria;
  • As initiatives expand, create a learning community of partners with shared goals;
  • Partner closely with colleagues across YA/YAF to deepen synergies;
  • Leverage skills and central services from Yoga Alliance (communications, finance, HR, etc.) that enhance program support to partners and ensure the Foundation’s agility;
  • Recruit, mentor, manage and retain a high-performing team of three to four with clear roles and tools to succeed; drive professional development and a positive, empowering performance culture;
  • Promote mindsets and actions focused on service, creativity, innovation, continuous improvement, and learning.

Qualifications:

Yoga Alliance Foundation’s Managing Director must bring a track record of community service in the health or wellness field and operational excellence in a nimble environment; and, ideally:

  • Identified and shaped innovative program approaches that integrate community voice, have delivered measurable outcomes and have been replicated;
  • Engaged program partners, volunteers and donors in a common direction; and
  • Expanded access to evidence-based programs

Critical skills and attributes include:

  • Partnership orientation: Listens, learns and collaborates; seeks out and tests ideas with significant input from a wide array of colleagues and community partners
  • Management and Team Development: Has inspired a small team; elevates team member ideas and innovative approaches; and creates development opportunities for professional growth.
  • Communications: Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills; effectively engages at all levels within and outside of an organization; adapts to multiple audiences and the needs of under- represented communities
