Known as a teacher’s teacher, Jo Phee is the Senior Lead Teaching Assistant for Yin Yoga founders Paul and Suzee Grilley. She is a first generation yin yoga teacher and has spent over 4000 hours apprenticing and assisting the Grilleys for more than a decade. Jo has been personally mentored by Paul to teach his entire Yin Yoga Teacher Training curriculum.
With 20 years of yoga experience, Jo was one of the first to introduce Yin Yoga in Asia. She spent her first decade of yoga career teaching more than 10,000 hours of public Yin classes before she travels the world full time conducting almost a hundred Yin Yoga Teacher Trainings to date.
Brought up with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) from childhood by her Chinese Taoist parents, all of Jo’s initial education on TCM was based on experiential knowledge passed down from generations in her Chinese family. She was taught Guasha by her grandparents and herbal medicine by her mother. To add academic education to her personal experience, Jo went on to study at the Singapore College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Jo graduated from the Bihar School of Yoga where she took rigorous examination to teach the original Yoga Nidra practice first developed by the Bihar School. Her formal education in this practice and knowledge of the Chinese Meridian system inspired her to develop a systematic and detailed outline of a new practice - Meridian Nidra.
Jo is the first Yin Yoga teacher to create a comprehensive Chinese Medicine module into a Yin Yoga Teacher Training program in 2012. She was also the first to introduce Guasha, Cupping, Acupressure, Moxibustion and Myofascial Release into Yin Yoga teacher training programs worldwide. Jo is the creator of Meridian Nidra, AcuYin and MyoYin.
Driven by a profound interest in functional anatomy and fascia, Jo has attended numerous human cadaver dissection labs in the United States and Europe. She has 700 hours of dissection lab experience from the past 9 years, and has studied up to 50 cadaver specimens to-date, including a dedicated neuroanatomical dissection of the brain and spinal cord. Jo has attended Dissection Labs at Marquette University in Wisconsin, Stanford University in California and the University of Padua in Italy. Her primary teacher is Gil Hedley. In 2018, she was involved with the Fascia Research Society to create the world’s first 3D Plastinated Human Body at the headquarters of the renowned Bodyworld Exhibition in Guben, Germany. She runs her own cadaver labs and works regularly with the fascia scientific committee on various fascia projects.
