Karen Breneman MFA, MSc Human Anatomy, is American by birth and now based in Scotland. She attributes her life of adventure and making things to her continuous, uninterrupted Yoga practice since 1999. After getting her first masters degree from the edinburgh college of art, Karen settled in Edinburgh and eventually founded Meadowlark based on years of working as a freelance Yoga teacher amidst art projects and cycling events.
Meadowlark, a holistic health organisation, gets its name from its location with massive antique windows opening up to the iconic Edinburgh ‘Meadows.’ As a result of injuries arising primarily from cycling and collapsed arches, including broken bones and meniscus tears, Karen pursued a masters degree in Anatomy to better understand the practice of Yoga. All of this experience has gone into her offering at Meadowlark Yoga.
Karen’s teaching practice centers on creative anatomy training techniques in order to better understand the unifying principles of Yoga. Karen travels to India each year to practice Ashtanga Yoga with her teachers in the Krishnamacharya lineage, having first worked with Pattabhi Jois in Mysore in 2003. She regularly visits the US, teaching in Boston and Florida where she has family and is connected to Yoga communities. She is the brand ambassador for Sweaty Betty, a British fashion company specialising in women’s fitness apparel.
When Karen is not teaching Yoga, she spends her time amongst family and friends, writing about anatomy, making anatomical models and prints, enjoying the outdoors, and working on innovative ways to nurture Meadowlark as a business and social health concept.
