Thomas (Tomas) Hernandez is a U.S. Army Service-Connected Veteran and third-generation military veteran. He is a former non-commissioned officer and completed a primary leadership development course (PLDC). Tomas served seven years on active duty for the U.S. Army and spent one year in the National Guard. His philosophy is practicing person-centered care and somatic work when helping clients with substance use and mental health challenges. His primary focus is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, which differs from common talk therapy.
He is currently a social worker, therapist, diversity, equity, and inclusion consultant, certified nutrition coach, yoga teacher, yoga therapist, equine-assisted psychotherapist, sports performance coach, and personal trainer. He is working on getting his health coach certification with the American Council on Exercise. He was trained as a certified peer support specialist and was employed for eight years in various inpatient and outpatient settings in mental health and substance use as a CPSS. He recently completed Level 1 in Irest (Integrative Restoration) in August 2023 to heal PTSD.
He led physical training classes, also known as (P.T.) while serving in the U.S. Army. His education includes his A.A. in general studies from Central Texas College, a B.A. in Sports Management with an emphasis on athletic coaching, fitness, and wellness, a minor in psychology from MidAmerica Nazarene University, and his master's in social work (MSW) from the University of Missouri of Kansas City. Outside of social work and helping others reach their goals in health and wellness, he enjoys reading books, cooking, exercising, being around horses, hiking, and doing yoga. He also enjoys board games, performing arts, listening to music, karaoke, Latin dancing, improv comedy, and concerts. In addition, he loves spending time with his family and friends, listening to podcasts, and hanging out with his miniature dachshund, Pancho.
