I started my yoga career over 20 years ago and things have changed.
I started yoga when I was a truck driver. I had back issues, I smoked a pack a day and ate, well let's just say I rarely did the healthy food option. My body was telling me I needed to change and I was not listening to it.
I was told I should try yoga. For me, at the time this was esoteric mumbo jumbo, but was told to give it two weeks then decide if that was true or not.
Boy, am I glad I did.
After the first two sessions I felt like a completely new man. I could tie my shoes with relatively no pain, for me, that was a big thing. I could sit without pain, I had more energy and didn't feel so tired.
After 2 one hour sessions!
Now, I started like many today, with a video, though mine was VHS and not YouTube! My first style was ISHTA as that was the video I had. When I moved to Toronto, I felt the yoga world literally opened up before me.
Man, did it ever!
I moved to Hatha in a few different studios, then onto Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Flow. I went from studio to studio to get as much as I could. I learnt many things, though economically speaking, I still wasn't able to pay for a teacher training course as I started University.
Thereafter, I travelled and worked in my field, archaeology. I've seen many places and wonderful and wonderfully strange and interesting people. After not finding any work in archaeology, I arrived in Germany as an English teacher.
After working some years I am now a registered yoga teacher and feel fantastic, where I belong in my professional life. It has been and continues to be a wonderful and wonderfully strange and interesting journey.
