Join the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) and Yoga Alliance (YA) in conversation as YA shares its updated policy and the role Scope of Practice plays in providing guiderails for yoga teachers and yoga therapists. This session will be hosted by Marsha Banks-Harold, owner of PIES Fitness Yoga Studio, who contributed to Yoga Alliance's Standards Review Project and Yoga Therapy Task Force. She will be joined by IAYT Board Member Molly McManus, YA Board Member Staffan Elgelid, and YA Vice President of Standards Dr. Christa Kuberry.


About the Presenters

In addition to being an IAYT-certified yoga therapist and an E-RYT 500, Molly is a somatic educator, ayurvedic health counselor, and ayurvedic chef offering private instruction and CE opportunities as a YACEP & APD provider. Molly co-owns Yoga North International SomaYoga Institute with Ann Maxwell and is co-founder of the methodology SomaYoga.

Molly and Yoga North offer instruction in SomaYoga’s unique approach to Yoga which blends a Therapeutic Approach to Classic Asana, Therapeutic Yoga, and the Neuromuscular Re-Education of Somatics along with deep study of Yogic Philosophy & Sacred Texts, Personal Development & Mind Study, as well as Ayurveda and Pranayama.

Molly currently serves on the IAYT Board of Directors and is a past chair of IAYT's Accreditation Committee. As a speaker and educator, Molly is sought for her interests in the resolution of chronic pain, diseases of stress and trauma, and supporting systems for whole-being well-being with Yoga, Ayurveda, and Somatics. She has had the pleasure of sharing this work all over the world as a presenter at many conferences and as a guide for Yoga North's Yoga Therapy adventures whose most recent trip brought them to Iceland.

She has designed programs such as Yoga North ISYI’s registered Yoga Teacher Training and Accredited Yoga Therapy Program, Nourish Ayurveda cooking and daily practice immersions, SomaYoga for Chronic Pain Resolution, and Teaching Yoga Therapy for Stress, Anxiety, and Depression.

Molly participates in continuous training and active engagement in her field. Her current journey includes co-authoring a book on SomaYoga methodology, developing a yoga therapy program to support ICU survivors, and serving as a lead faculty member for Yoga North programs.

Staffan Elgelid is a yoga teacher trainer and has been a physical therapist for over 30 years. A native of Sweden and graduate of the University of Central Arkansas, Staffan has worked in a wide variety of settings (including owning his own clinics) and has presented at conferences in the US and in Europe about topics such as guided imagery, healthy aging, mentoring, awareness, core strengthening, and Feldenkrais.

Staffan has written two books, Yoga for Stress & Anxiety and Yoga Therapy: A Personalized Approach for an Active Lifestyle. He has produced DVDs about core strengthening, foam roller use, and yoga for volleyball and basketball; he also produces the “On Your Authority” podcast. Dr. Elgelid is currently on the faculty at YogaLife Institute in Devon, Pennsylvania, and is a Professor of Physical Therapy at Nazareth College.

Marsha D. Banks-Harold, BSEE, Director of PIES Fitness Holistic Yoga Therapy and Yoga Teacher Training Programs, owner of PIES Fitness Yoga Studio, creator of My Body Don’t Bend That Way Yoga, executive engineering leader, and co-founder of Awakening Yoga Spaces, is a certified yoga therapist through the International Association of Yoga Therapists and a Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga Facilitator and Mentor through the Center for Trauma and Embodiment. She is published in Yoga Therapy Today: 1) Building the Business of Yoga Therapy and 2) Reclaiming Humanity & Community: Healing the Trauma, Pain, & Suffering of Prejudice and Disparity and is a contributing author in Yoga Therapy Foundations, Tools, and Practice: a Comprehensive Textbook. Marsha blossoms in creating supportive, inclusive, diverse, adaptive and accessible yoga therapy and yoga experiences for all. She is an experienced workshop leader and public speaker.

Dr. Christa Kuberry leads Yoga Alliance’s ongoing efforts to evaluate and evolve yoga teacher training standards. A yoga teacher, yoga student, and yoga scholar, Christa has been practicing asana for more than 15 years and received her Ph.D. in 2015. She currently serves on the steering committee for the Yoga Theory and Practice Group at the American Academy of Religion and has most recently taught courses on Yoga, Comparative Religions, Ethics, and Wellness at the University of Denver and the University of Colorado. Christa has extensive experience in corporate wellness and is a nationally recognized educator, frequently asked to speak and teach at workshops and events around the United States.
