Yoga in Healthcare: Exploring Integration and Impact

About This Event

An exploratory conversation into the topic of yoga integration into health care settings. We’ll discuss the unique work of the YogaX at Stanford Psychiatry team, findings from the Yoga in the World research study, and explore what strides have been made in these efforts as well as what roadblocks remain.


About the Presenters

Geno is the Program Manager at YogaX at Stanford Psychiatry. He is a passionate health educator dedicated to helping people make healthy choices and increasing access to health services. As a health educator, researcher, teacher, trainer, and coach, Geno's work is grounded in yoga teachings, the pillars of lifestyle medicine, and the essential services of public health. Geno works to promote complete physical, mental, and social well-being and address health equity through coalition building and policy innovation. His work aims to increase individual and collective access to integrative care and build community capacity to empower people to proactively embrace a healthy life informed by their communities' collective experiences.

Christiane Brems, PhD, ABPP, RYT-500, C-IAYT, received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Oklahoma State University in 1987. Dr. Brems is licensed as a psychologist and board-certified as a clinical psychologist by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP). She is an experienced Yoga Alliance registered yoga teacher (E-RYT500) and Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider. She is also a certified C-IAYT yoga therapist and Interactive Imagery Guide.

Dr. Brems directs YogaX, an innovative yoga school and special initiative in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University’s School of Medicine. YogaX provides teacher training, continuing education, and community services geared toward health professionals and yoga teachers who want to provide yoga classes and services in the context of a healthcare setting. Dr. Brems served on faculty at the University of Alaska Anchorage for 23 years, where she held a variety of leadership positions, including as (Co-Founding) Director of the Center for Behavioral Health Research and Services, (Co-Founding) Director of the PhD Program in Clinical-Community Psychology, and Interim Vice Provost for Research and Dean of the Graduate School. Most recently, she served for nearly six years as Dean and Professor of the School of Graduate Psychology (SGP) at Pacific University Oregon. At Pacific U, she developed a therapeutic yoga clinical initiative and a therapeutic yoga research team, the basis for what was to become the YogaX Team at Stanford Psychiatry. Dr. Brems has worked for decades as an applied researcher and clinical practitioner with particular interests in health promotion, rural healthcare delivery, and all things yoga. Her work has been funded by grants and contracts from the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Dis. Control and Prevention, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration, and local and State of Alaska funding sources.
