Registration

How do I register with Yoga Alliance®?

You can find detailed information, including step-by-step instructions, on our How to Register page. Top

What are the requirements for registration with Yoga Alliance?

To register with Yoga Alliance, you must complete teacher training at a Registered Yoga School (RYS®) at the 200, 200 and 300 or 500-hour level. When you complete your training, you will be given a certificate to submit when registering with Yoga Alliance. You may choose from more than 5,700 RYSs listed on our Directory by geographic region, city, state, style and other options.

Registered Yoga Schools listed on the online Directory are currently registered with Yoga Alliance. Contact the director of teacher training at the RYS to inquire about the program content, fees, schedule and style of yoga that they teach. Top

Do you accept applications from trainees of non-registered schools? Do you allow registration if the school was not registered when I completed my training, but is registered now?

To register with Yoga Alliance, you must complete a RYS 200-hour or 500-hour teacher training program. When you complete the training, you will be given a certificate to submit with your application for registration.

We do not accept applications from trainees of non-registered schools. Your school must be registered at the time of your program completion in order to register with Yoga Alliance. Top

How do I obtain my Registry Marks for usage on my website and in marketing materials?

When you log in to our website, you should arrive at your teacher dashboard. In the middle of the page, you’ll see your Registry Mark for your designation. Just below that image is a red “Download Registry Mark” button. Click it to download a PNG file. This PNG is your new printable Registry Card. Once downloaded, you can open the file, click “Save As” to save it to your computer, or click the “Print” option to print it out. For more details, please see the Registry Marks Usage GuideTop

I am trying to register / upgrade, but my RYS is not on the list. What should I do?

If you are unable to find the RYS where you completed your yoga teacher training when you register, please confirm the following:

  • Your school is registered with Yoga Alliance or was registered when you completed your training. We do not accept applications from graduates of non-registered schools.
  • You are entering the name of the school as it is registered with Yoga Alliance.
  • Your training program is the designation you selected. Your RYS 500 may be a RYS 300. Top

I don't have a digital copy of my yoga teacher training certificate. What should I do?

In order to register with Yoga Alliance, you will need to upload a copy of your yoga teacher training certificate. You can either scan the certificate or take a picture of it with a digital camera or smartphone. Save the file to your computer in an acceptable file format (.gif, .jpeg, .png, .doc, or .pdf) and upload it to our website. Top

Are my responses to the review of my RYS public?

The Overall School Recommendation Rating is always public and your response is not anonymous. The Yoga Alliance review system is designed using the best practices of online rating systems. One of the most successful means of building trust and increasing civility in a social ratings environment is to prevent anonymous reviews. With their identity known, trainees will be accountable for the feedback they provide, and the RYSs will have more context to understand and act upon the feedback. The lack of anonymity will encourage constructive, respectful communication between the trainees and schools. The RYS has the choice of posting the comments to the public (they can choose to post either all or none of the comments).

Since the trainees have a relationship with the school and its community, there will be an inherent bias for trainees to rate schools favorably. However, this bias will happen with all RYSs being rated, which will raise the relative value of the ratings (i.e., if all RYSs are rated one star higher due to the bias, there is still a relative difference between a 4-star RYS vs. a 5-star RYS). If we allowed anonymous reviews, trainees would have less incentive to respond fairly and carefully, decreasing trust and accuracy in the system. Learn more about Social CredentialingTop

Can I evaluate my RYS if I registered with Yoga Alliance prior to the launch of the new online system?

At this time there is no way for past trainee's to evaluate their RYSs if they registered with Yoga Alliance prior to the launch of the new website and registration system. That option may be made available in the future. In the meantime, trainees may state they completed training with their RYS in the abstract of their public profile on the Directory listing. Top

I'm ready to upload my school's Sample Certificate. What does it need to include?

We require a sample of the certificate given to your trainees when they complete your teacher training program. Certificates should include:

  • the name of your RYS as it is registered with Yoga Alliance in English characters
  • the Track designation, e.g., the level of training conducted (e.g., 200 hour, 300 hour, 500 hour, Children's, Prenatal)
  • a space for the legal name of the trainee in English characters
  • a space where it will be signed by an authorized signatory for the RYS (Lead Trainer or Owner of the RYS)
  • a space for the legal name of the signatory written in English characters
  • a space for the training completion date
  • the RYS logo, if applicable

You can upload only the following file types: PDF, jpg, png, gif, or Microsoft Word. Browse for your file first and then click the “Upload File” button when it is recognized. Top

Can I review my RYS I attended many years ago?

At this time, only trainees who have completed a teacher training program and are registering or upgrading with Yoga Alliance will be able to review their school. If you completed a program at a RYS before we implemented our Social Credentialing system and are already a RYT, you are not able to review your school at this time. Top

You may enter teaching hours into your profile as frequently as you earn them. Top

How should I group teaching hours when logging them?

There is no specific order in which you should log teaching hours; however, if you are working toward upgrading to Registered Children's Yoga Teacher (RCYT®) or Registered Prenatal Yoga Teacher (RPYT®), you must select "Children's Yoga" or "Prenatal Yoga" from the "Class Type" drop-down menu in order for these hours to be applied toward that upgrade.

Why are my teaching hours not appearing in chronological order?

Our system does not automatically arrange teaching hours in chronological order. Your hours will still correctly total. Top

Why do I not receive a printed Registry ID card anymore?

Registered Yoga Teachers now have an online account with a quick and easy way to print Registry ID cards. Some of our members need printed cards for employment purposes; however, a digital version is usually sufficient. You can keep a digital copy on your computer or smart phone for easy access. Top

What is the difference between my Legal Name and Directory/Public Registry Name?

Your Legal Name will not be published on the Directory. Your Directory/Public Registry Name is the name by which you will be searchable on the Directory. You can put any name you wish (i.e., your spiritual name) in this field; it is the only name that will be shown to the general public and the only field that will be searched for on the Directory. Your legal name is required for communication with you and to ensure that we are registering the right person. Short forms of your name (i.e., ‘Pat’ for ‘Patricia’ or ‘Bob’ for ‘Robert’) may go in the Directory Name, but the Legal first name and Legal last name fields must be your legal names. Please view the Yoga Alliance Registrant Legal Name policy for more information. Top

How do I update/edit my teacher profile and Directory listing information?

You can edit your teacher profile by selecting "My Profile" from the left menu of your teacher dashboard. From there, you may edit your bio, profile settings, Directory address, teaching experience, and more. Top

For Schools:

How do I access my new RYS account?

The person who is listed as the main contact of your RYS will be able to access your RYS account using their email.

Log in to your account (you may reset your password if you forgot it). From your RYS account, you can approve teacher trainees awaiting your confirmation in order to register with Yoga Alliance, update your profile, enter in your syllabus, add School Staff Roles and more. Top

How do I give other people access to my RYS account?

How do I read reviews of my RYS?

How do I update/edit my school profile?

You can edit your school profile by selecting “Manage School” from the left menu of your school dashboard. Open the “School Profile” drop-down menu, and select “Edit School Profile”. Your school profile contains information like your school description, your biography, your website and any social media links (information that is usually consistent across any locations where you may offer training). Address/location information (including the contact person) is found in the Directory Locations Listing section, and can be different for each individual Directory Location Listing. Top

How do I update/edit my school Directory Location Listings?

To edit your school location, in the left menu, go to “Manage School” and click to open the “Directory Location Listings” section. You can add, edit, or remove your school location listings from this page. Your first Directory Location Listing is included with your registration/annual renewal. Additional Location Listings will not show up in the Directory until you have paid for them. Each Location Listing gives you a separate profile page in the Yoga Alliance Directory for that location. Top

I have multiple school locations. How will they be searchable on the new Directory?

If you have multiple school locations, they will all appear in our Directory. Each Location Listing has its individual profile page, which can be found via search, and connects to a list of other Location Listings for the same school.  Individual Location Listings are often found using geographic searches and can be useful if you offer the same training in multiple locations.  All Location Listings share the same school description, website, and social media icons.  Contact details, addresses, and the logo that will show up on the profile page can be configured individually for each Location Listing. Top

How do I edit the Location or address for my RYS?

The physical address of some school locations may not correspond with an owner’s billing information or may not be where he/she wants postal mail sent, so you may need to edit or update your address according to your preferences. Our online Directory search will use your “School Locations” to populate results. To edit your RYS Locations:

  • Log in to the Manage Programs section of your online account (you may reset your password if you forgot it). Scroll down and click on the option for “School Locations”
  • Click on “Edit Location” to make changes to existing locations. Complete the required fields and click “Save” when you are done.
  • You can also add a new RYS location here; Additional Location Listings may be added for $50 per year. You may opt to not renew an existing/old Location Listing.
All of the addresses in this section will be visible in the online public Directory and on your RYS profile. To edit your Billing/Shipping information:

Why is my RYS 500 now a RYS 300?

We now have three designations for schools: RYS 200, RYS 300 and RYS 500.

You can view information about the RYS designations here. A RYS 300 (which must also hold a RYS 200) offers two separate segments of training, permitting trainees to receive certificates after the first 200 hours and again after the 300 hours of advanced training. (Trainees who complete both RYS 200 and RYS 300 programs can register as a RYT 500). By contrast, a RYS 500 offers 500 hours of training without permitting trainees to receive a certificate until they complete the full 500-hour training. A trainee may transfer to a RYS 300 program from another RYS.

For detailed information, please review the RYS 300 article here. Top

How do I add a trainer or Lead Trainer to my RYS?

  • Log in to the “Manage Schools” section of your RYS account.
  • Scroll down to “Trainers” to search for and add an active RYT. If eligible and applicable, click the link “Mark as Lead Trainer” to denote this person as a Lead Trainer (a green ellipse should now appear beside the trainer name).
  • To add that Trainer to a Track, scroll down to “Tracks and Syllabi”, click on “Edit Track” and select that person from the drop down menu.
  • Once you save the changes to your Track, you can edit your syllabus and will see that trainer’s name as an option to assign sessions/topics to. You will also be able to schedule Programs of that Track with any of its Lead Trainers. Top

How do I approve a "Teacher Trainee Awaiting Confirmation"?

Sign in to Manage Programs part of your account for information about scheduling programs and approving teacher trainees. Top

What if a trainee has outstanding requirements in order to complete the training when we receive the Program Confirmation Request?

If a trainee has not met the requirements to complete the training for any reason, a yoga teacher training certificate should not be issued. However, if a trainee has been issued a certificate and has any outstanding requirements when the Program Confirmation Request is submitted, RYS staff should reject the request and send a notification to the trainee with reasons for the rejection. The trainee may submit a new Program Confirmation Request after meeting all outstanding requirements of the RYS. Top

What does it mean to be the "Owner" of a RYS?

Yoga Alliance defines a RYS Owner as the person (or the representative within an entity) who has the legal signing authority for a school – i.e., with tax documents and banking institutions.  Top

How do I change the "Owner" of a RYS?

Please follow the appropriate instructions below:

Adding a new Owner

  • Click the red link to “Select” the correct person from the search results.
  • Click on the small box to the left of the word “Owner” and then read the message in the pop-up window that appears. If you agree, click “OK.” Then click the “Add” button to add this person as an Owner.

Removing an owner
Owners can only remove themselves – they cannot remove other Owners and other Owners cannot remove them. To remove yourself (or an old or outdated email address that is assigned as an Owner in your RYS account), you must log in with that Owner’s login credentials.

  • Log in to the Manage Programs section of your online account (you may reset your password if you forgot it). Scroll down and click on “Staff."
  • Click on “Edit Roles” on the line of the Owner (or email address) you would like to change/remove.

  • As a Syllabus Manager, you may now completely remove your account from being associated with this school.
  • Click on the “Remove” hyperlink on the right side of the line of the person (or email) you would like to remove.
  • If you are certain you would like to remove this staff account, click “Yes” when the confirmation pop-up window appears. The page will refresh, and if you re-open the “Staff” section you will notice that user name disappeared from your “Staff” list.
  • Log out to end your current session in order for these changes to fully take effect. Top

Can I upload my syllabus?

At this time, it is not possible to upload a syllabus from Word or Excel. However, if you've used our Syllabus Worksheet (XLS or PDF), you can copy and past the contents of each session into our online system. Top

  1. Log in to the Manage Schools section of your account.
  2. Scroll down to section labeled “Trainers” and click on the box to expand it. 3. Now, scroll to the “Tracks and Syllabi” section and click on the box to expand it. Below your existing, verified Tracks, click on the green button at the bottom right to “Create New Track.” Begin entering your training one session at a time.
  4. When your syllabus is complete and you are ready to submit and pay for your application, return to the “Tracks and Syllabi” section and click on the “Pay Now” button at the bottom right. Please note that your annual renewal dues will be automatically pro-rated to align with your school’s next renewal date for your existing, verified Track(s).

Note: after you upload your Track syllabus to your RYS account, it will be published as part of your public profile. Top

  • Log in to the Manage School section of your online account (you may reset your password if you forgot it). Scroll down on this page and click on the bar titled "School Locations."
  • Click “Add Location,” fill in the required information and click “Save.”
  • Under the “Locations” bar, review the information to ensure that it is correct. Once you add all of the locations you would like to add for your RYS, please click the green “Pay Now” button to submit your payment by credit card or PayPal to complete the process. Top

What is the difference between a teacher training program and a Teacher Training Track?

A Teacher Training Track

is a subset of a school designation for a RYS to register one or more training of the same designation type. For example, a RYS 200 can have one 200-hour Track dedicated to teaching Hatha yoga or it may also add a separate 200-hour Track, with a different syllabus, dedicated to Raja yoga. Each Track includes a syllabus that outlines the content of the training and is reviewed by Yoga Alliance to ensure it meets our standards for registration. Each RYS has one Track per designation and may add more Tracks at any time.

Teacher training programs

are specific courses when your Track is conducted. For example, your Track might be a 200-hour Vinyasa teacher training, but your program might be the “2013 Fall 200-hour Vinyasa Teacher Training”. Programs include a name, set of trainers, start date, end date, Track, and location. In addition, RYSs add trainees to each program as part of the teacher registration process. Programs are set up after you have a verified Track for your RYS. Top

Why does a RYS have to upload a Sample Certificate for each registered Teacher Training Track?

Yoga Alliance must have a sample certificate on file for each registered Teacher Training Track in case Yoga Alliance staff need to review an applicant's completion request. While a RYS must approve or reject a Program Confirmation Request, if they do not respond within two (2) weeks, the Yoga Alliance credentialing team has the right to review the trainees request. If the signed teacher training certificate matches the Sample Certificate on file, the Yoga Alliance credentialing team will approve the request, taking the certificate as evidence that the applicant successfully completed the training. Top

May past trainees evaluate my training?

Registered Yoga Schools may only receive a review and rating from teachers who registered with us after December 2013. Although RYTs cannot rate their past trainings, if students from trainings prior to December 2013 later choose to register with Yoga Alliance, they can review and rate your training as part of their registration process. In the meantime, we encourage you to include the following information in your RYS public bio:

We do not have a rating at this time because no students from our school registered with Yoga Alliance since the new Social Credentialing system launched in December of 2013. If you would like more information about our school, please contact us. Top

How do I add programs for a RYS?

  • Log in to the Manage Programs section of your online account (you may reset your password if you forgot it).
  • Click on the “Add New Program” button. Fill in the program name (e.g., Yoga Alliance 200-Hour YTT – Spring 2014) and the start and end dates.
  • Select the “Track” and the “Location” from the drop-down menus.
  • Select the Lead Trainers.
  • Click “Save” to complete the program creation. Program dates will appear on your RYS public profile along with the syllabus associated with the program Track. Top

Can I schedule breaks in my training?

Yes, Yoga Alliance permits RYSs to include up to 10 minutes of breaks per RYS Curriculum Contact Hour of a teacher training program. Learning comprehension is enhanced by physical movement, so it is reasonable for training sessions to include water, restroom and stretch breaks throughout training. If breaks are not taken, a RYS cannot add 10 minutes per hour to the total number of Contact Hours. There is no need to keep track of breaks precisely but please ensure breaks are 10 minutes or less per hour. Top

Why are we asking RYSs for a syllabus?

Syllabi are a standard practice for any educational program and reflect a school’s competence and professionalism. We require RYSs to submit a syllabus outlining the curriculum for each Teacher Training Track. The syllabus is a break down of your training’s content into sessions/topics with titles and descriptions which state what will be covered in the training and what information and skills trainees will learn. New schools must submit their syllabus as part of their RYS application. In the future all existing RYSs will be required to enter a syllabus for each of their Tracks in their online account in order for their trainees to register with Yoga Alliance. Registered Yoga Schools will be notified at least six months prior to when this requirement will be enforced.

We are asking for a syllabus for several reasons:

  1. A syllabus is recognized in the education field as the least-detailed summary outline of a program of learning. In the past, we asked for our schools’ curricula, which often lead to applicants providing too much of the wrong information. By streamlining our requirement to a syllabus, our credentialing team can more easily review RYS Tracks to ensure that they meet our standards.
  2. Every yoga teacher training program should have a syllabus, which is widely recognized as a basic and essential element of a competent learning program. A teacher in a program of higher education, for example, creates and publishes a syllabus before each course.
  3. Trainees who participate in your teacher training program should have an outline of what you are planning to teach them. A syllabus can serve as their roadmap for that training. They should be able to see where they are at any given point during the course of your program.
  4. We want to be able to ensure that the teacher training programs that register with us are actually delivering the programs they register. Under our Social Credentialing system, each trainee who finishes a program at a RYS will complete an objective review of the program. The first question trainees will be asked is how closely the RYS’s syllabus that is registered with Yoga Alliance corresponds to the course the trainee was actually taught.

Although not required, we encourage RYSs to share their learning objectives for each step in the training process, as well as overall learning objectives for the entire program. Schools that don’t provide overall program learning objectives will have universal objectives assigned to them, based on the level of the program they have registered (e.g., RYS 200, RYS 500, RCYS, etc.). Top

Why do I need to post my syllabus publicly?

One of the ways that you, the yoga community, and Yoga Alliance can earn more credibility is through transparency. Since the syllabus is the basis of your registration with Yoga Alliance, it’s reasonable for the public (including potential trainees) to wish to view it. By being transparent and posting your syllabus publically, you’re building credibility for your teacher training program.

Providing the public with more information about the nature and scope of your teacher training program also equips potential trainees with the information they need to choose a program that best fits their individual needs and preferences. If they understand what to expect, you are more likely to receive trainees who are a good fit for your program. Top

Isn’t my intellectual property at risk if my syllabus is publicly posted?

We are only asking for a summary outline of your program, not the content of your curriculum or the teaching materials for each lesson. We don’t believe the program outline we are asking you for is “intellectual property” that you should be concerned about sharing. The value that you and other RYSs provide is contained not in the words of your syllabus, but in your underlying knowledge and experience as a yoga teacher that allows you to effectively deliver the program. We believe that even if someone “stole” your program’s syllabus and used it as their own, they wouldn't be able to deliver the same program unless they also understood how to turn those words into a rich learning experience.

We have heard many different opinions about syllabi visibility settings from our members and the yoga community as a whole. As a result, our Standards Committee and board of directors are investigating if this policy needs to be revisited and if our system should allow for privacy settings for syllabi. While we do not yet have a decision, any decisions made by the board will be announced on our website and via our online newsletter. Top

Will schools be able to create some of their own questions for the review?

Yes! Schools may submit up to three questions of their choice to be included in the review. Top

What if I change my teacher training program after I have been verified by Yoga Alliance?

A RYS can enter changes at any time to its Track(s). At this time, our credentialing team only reviews syllabi for new school/Track applications. Any changes to the review process will be announced on our website and via our email newsletter. Top

Upgrades

For Teachers:

I've upgraded to E-RYT and was invited to evaluate my school. How do I do this?

If your upgrade was from RYT 200 to E-RYT 200, or if it was from RYT 500 to E-RYT 500, you will not be able to review your school’s program.

In our new system, reviews are initiated after a trainee completes a request for confirmation from their school. This function is currently just for new registrants or people who are upgrading to/adding RYT 500, RCYT, or RPYT to their designation. Top

How do I upgrade my RYT designation?

To upgrade your designation you must submit an advanced training certificate from a RYS 300, RYS 500, RCYS or RPYS, and enter the required number of yoga teaching hours after the completion of your RYS 200, RYS 500, or specialty training.

  1. Login to your YA account. Click on the login link on the top right of any YA webpage and enter the email and password associated with your account. Use the Forgot Password link if you do not remember your password.
  2. Select your designation. Scroll down to “Want to Upgrade? Choose a designation to get started”.  Select the designation to which you would like to upgrade and the system will show you the requirements for that designation.
  3. Enter your training program. Enter your training program details and submit a Program Confirmation Request to your RYS. (You can omit this step if you are upgrading to a designation that requires adding time and experience only).
    • Underneath “Training Program Confirmations,” click the “Add Program” button.
    • Under “Select Program designation” click the circle next to the desired upgrade designation.
    • Enter your program start and end dates.
    • Enter and select the name of your RYS.
    • Upload your certificate by clicking “Browse for File.” The size of your certificate may be up to 12 MB in size and must be in an acceptable format (PDF, JPG, GIF or PNG).
    • Request your program confirmation by clicking the “Send Request” button.
  4. Enter your Teaching Hours. Add the required number of teaching hours by clicking “Add Teaching Hours”.  Enter your hours using a close approximation of the hours you taught during a particular time period. You can make as many or as few entries as you like. Select the start and end dates, then select the class type and enter the total number of hours taught during that time frame.
    • There are no teaching hours required to register as a RYT 200.
    • To register as a RYT 500, you must have a minimum of 100 teaching hours.
    • To register as an E-RYT 200, you must have a minimum of two years teaching experience and 1,000 teaching hours after the completion date of your RYS 200 training.
    • To register as an E-RYT 500, you must have a minimum of four years teaching experience and 2,000 teaching hours (1,500 teaching hours after the completion date of your RYS 200 training and an additional 500 teaching hours after the completion date of your RYS 300 or RYS 500 training.)
    • To register as a RPYT or RCYT, you must be a RYT and have a minimum of 30 teaching hours of prenatal or children’s yoga after the completion of your specialty training.
  5. Wait for RYS Confirmation. If your upgrade requires you to submit an advanced certificate, your RYS must confirm that you completed their training. When you submit your Program Confirmation Request, your school will be notified. Once the school has confirmed that you completed their training, you will be notified via email and invited to login and continue your registration.
  6. Pay your Fees. Log in to your account to pay your one time upgrade fee of $50. Use the “Pay Now” button and follow the prompts to submit payment.
  7. Review your School. If you submitted an advanced certificate, a RYS review is required to complete your upgrade. After you submit payment, click the “Review Now” button on your invoice page. If you do not submit your review upon payment, the green “Review Now” button will be accessible on your dashboard by scrolling down to the upgrade requirement checklist. You will not be able to access your new Registry Mark or registry card until you submit a review. Please remember that your school review is NOT ANONYMOUS.
  8. Update your RYT Profile. Once you have submitted a review of your school, your RYT profile will automatically reflect your new designation and Registry Mark. Remember to update your RYT profile to include your current teaching experience and a current bio in the online Directory listing. Top

Is there a grandparenting option to become a Registered Yoga Teacher?

Yoga Alliance does not offer any alternate pathway or grandparenting option for individual teachers. The Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT®) credential means that a teacher has graduated from a Registered Yoga School (RYS®).

When Yoga Alliance was first founded, we offered a grandparenting option. This option ended in 2010 and will not resume. We also used to accept RYT applications from trainees of non-registered schools that could demonstrate that their training met Yoga Alliance standards; this option ended in 2011 and will not resume. Top

Can I still upgrade to RCYT or RPYT via grandparenting?

As of January 1st, 2016, Yoga Alliance no longer offers teachers the option of upgrading to Registered Children's Yoga Teacher (RCYT®) or Registered Prenatal Yoga Teacher (RPYT®) via grandparenting.

For Schools:

How do I apply for an additional Teacher Training Track for my RYS (a new syllabus or a different designation)?

  • Log in to the Manage Programs section of your online account (you may reset your password if you forgot it). Scroll down to section labeled “Trainers” and click on the box to expand it. Add the trainers who will teach sessions in your new Teacher Training Track, ensuring you marked your Lead Trainer(s) and your Lead Trainer(s) hold(s) the appropriate E-RYT credential for the RYS designation in your application. If you will have non-RYTs involved in your new teacher training program, scroll to the section for “Other Faculty” and complete all required fields to add them.
  • Scroll down to section labeled “Trainers” and click on the box to expand it. Add the trainers who will teach sessions in your new Track, ensuring you’ve marked your Lead Trainer(s) and your Lead Trainer(s) hold(s) the appropriate E-RYT credential for the RYS designation in your application.. If you will have non-RYTs involved in your new teacher training program, scroll to the section for “Other Faculty” and complete all required fields to add them.
  • Complete the required selection/fields for designation type and Track name and add your Track trainers. You may also identify your Track with one of the provided yoga types, to help your Track show up in a public Directory search (select “Specialty Yoga” for prenatal or children’s yoga trainings). Click “Create Track” to continue and begin entering your syllabus.
  • When your syllabus is complete and you are ready to submit and pay for your application, return to the “Tracks and Syllabi” section and click on the “Pay Now” button at the bottom right. Please note your annual renewal fee will be automatically pro-rated to align with your school’s next renewal date for your existing, assessed Track(s). Top

Social Credentialing

Who will be able to review the schools?

Trainees who have completed a teacher training program and are registering or upgrading with Yoga Alliance will be able to review their school. Top

Why is there no option to be anonymous when reviewing schools?

The Yoga Alliance review system is designed using the best practices of online rating systems. One of the most successful means of building trust and increasing civility in a social ratings environment is to prevent anonymous reviews. With their identity known, trainees will be accountable for the feedback they provide, and the schools will have more context to understand and act upon the feedback. The lack of anonymity will encourage constructive, respectful communication between the trainees and schools. The school has the choice of posting the comments to the public (they can choose to post either all or none of the comments). Since the trainees have a relationship with the school and its community, there will be an inherent bias for trainees to rate schools favorably. However, this bias will happen with all schools being rated, which will raise the relative value of the ratings (i.e., if all schools are rated one star higher due to the bias, there is still a relative difference between a 4-star school vs. a 5-star school). If we allowed anonymous reviews, trainees would have less incentive to respond fairly and carefully, decreasing trust and accuracy in the system. Top

For Teachers:

Why can my school now post a response to my review comments?

Yoga Alliance is happy to announce that we are opening up the ability for schools to respond publicly to review comments from their trainees. It is our goal to foster a healthy dialogue in the safe, respectful environment of the Yoga Alliance Social Credentialing system. We hope that your training was a positive experience and that the response from the school is one of appreciation for all your hard work in completing your training. Top

Will the RYS response to my review comments be visible on the school’s public profile?

RYS star ratings are always visible on the public profile, but we also encourage our schools to publish their review comments which are great visibility and promotion. Your review comments may go a long way in helping potential trainees find the best fit for them! If your RYS has chosen to make their review comments viewable, their response will appear on the school’s public profile page. Top

How do I view the RYS response?

If your RYS has chosen to make their review comments viewable, you can find any response they have made to your review comments on the school’s public profile page. Top

Is it possible to have the RYS response removed from their public profile?

We are very excited about the opportunity for schools to be able to respond to review comments from their trainees and we feel that it will encourage schools and trainees to engage in a free and open dialogue. Each of our schools is entitled to respond to your review comments, and it is our hope that the response is fair, valid, constructive and objective. Therefore we cannot remove RYS responses at the request of trainees. If you have further concerns regarding the RYS response, we recommend contacting your school directly. Top

How do I respond to the RYS response to my review comments?

Yoga Alliance greatly appreciates your feedback, but in the interest of brevity, we ask that each trainee and RYS submit one comment only. We encourage you to contact your RYS directly if you would like further information on the response given. Top

For Schools:

Why am I now able to post a response to my trainee’s review comments?

Yoga Alliance is happy to announce that we are opening up the ability for schools to respond publicly to review comments from their trainees. It is our goal to foster a healthy dialogue in the safe, respectful environment of the Yoga Alliance Social Credentialing System. We are excited to be able to give you this opportunity to thank your trainees for their review comments and promote the visibility of your teacher trainings on your public profile. Top

Who at my RYS will be able to post the response to trainee review comments?

RYS Owners and Syllabus Managers will have the ability to post a response to trainee review comments. Top

How do I post a response to a trainee’s review comments?

Posting a response is easy! From your school dashboard, go to “Reviews” and then “All Reviews” Click “View” next to the review to which you would like to respond and then select “Post a Response”. If you would like assistance posting your RYS response, please feel free to contact Yoga Alliance at info@yogaalliance.org. Top

How many times can I post a response to a trainee’s review comments?

Yoga Alliance greatly values your feedback. We ask that you include as much useful, objective information as possible in your response. The opportunity to post a response to a trainee’s review comment is one-time only. Once posted, it can no longer be edited, so please take your time before posting. Top

Will the responses to trainee review comments be visible on my RYS public profile?

Absolutely – if you allow comments to be visible! Your star rating will always be visible on your school’s public profile, but we also encourage you to publish your review comments. Sharing both positive and less positive review comments can be beneficial. The totality of the review comments will help potential students discern if your training is right for them, and both types of review comments contribute to this decision making process – as does how you have chosen to respond. If you have chosen to make your review comments visible, your response will appear on your public profile. Top

Directory

The Directory looks different. Why did you change it?

You’re right, welcome to the new and improved Yoga Alliance Directory! Our new Directory is even more powerful than before, which means it is easier for users to find you and your classes. With this improved Directory, we are ensuring that ALL of our members have as much visibility as possible on their Directory listings. Our goal is to make sure that people looking for your listings are able to find them as easily as possible based on what they are most likely to be looking for when selecting a RYS or RYT. Top

Why am I not able to find myself on the Directory?

There are a few reasons why you may be found in our Directory. First, make sure your profile is published. Second, please be sure that your membership is current. If your registration has expired, your listing will not show on the Directory. Third, make sure your Directory address contains a specific location if you want to be found using a geographic search. Not sure? Log in and check out your Directory or Location Listing address in your profile. Top

I entered a Directory/Location Listing Address but I am seeing an error message asking me to select a specific location. What am I doing wrong?

The street address you enter as a Directory/Location Listing Address must be a specific physical location. Please make sure you have selected a specific location (a park, street address, point of interest, business, metro station, zip code, building, etc.) from the dropdown and then select the one that matches your desired location. As you are typing, the address field will auto-populate with a valid street address based on the information you enter. If you see a message that you have not selected a specific location, please make sure your entry is not too broad (for example, a city or province or country), and try again.Top

How do I search for a teacher or school on the Directory?

To search for a teacher, go to “Find a Teacher” at the top of any page and enter your search criteria. You can then sort your search results by name, distance, teaching hours, or keyword (e.g., “Flow Yoga”). You can also search for schools through a similar process; go to “Find a School” at the top of any page and enter your search criteria.  You can then sort your search results by school location name, distance, rating, or keyword (e.g., “Mindful”).  Top

How do I contact a teacher on the Directory?

You can contact teachers on our Directory by clicking through to their profile and then looking for the button that says “email me” under the “Connect With Me” heading. If you do not see “email me”, the teacher has chosen not to be contacted directly by email. Top

Why do I have to provide a Directory Address to be found on the Directory?

Our new Directory uses your Directory Address to help people find you by location. People search by all different types of locations; by country, state, city, neighborhood, or near an exact address and we want to make it as easy as possible for them to find you – wherever you are! To make the searching seamless, we need to know where your address fits in relation to those criteria.

In order to be searchable by location on our Directory, you need to enter a valid street address as your Directory Address. This can be any physical location that would show up on Google Maps. It DOES NOT have to be your home address. Some good options for a location other than your home are a nearby park, metro station, yoga studio, point of interest, zip code, business, or location where you teach. As long as there is an exact location, not just a city and/or state, the new Directory will be able to help people searching for you to find your profile.

If you choose not to enter a Directory Address, you will be found by name, keyword, or designation only. Many people do geographic searches, so we highly recommend entering a Directory Address. Top

I do not wish to provide a specific Directory/Location Listing Address. Will I still be searchable on the Directory?

You do not need to enter your home, shipping or billing address to be searchable on the Directory. You may choose any location close to you (e.g., a park or intersection near you, a location you teach or any other exact location),  and enter it as your Directory Address (for RYTs) or Location Listing Address (for RYSs) so that people will be able to successfully find you when they do a geographic search.

If you choose not to enter a valid street address as a Directory/Location Listing Address, you will be searchable in the Directory by name, keyword, or designation only. Top

Payments

What does Yoga Alliance do with my dues?

Your annual dues keep our organization running. We have over 85,500 Registered Yoga Teachers and 5,700 Registered Yoga Schools as registrants and members. The support and administration of such a large community requires significant effort and resources. We have a dedicated staff headquartered in Arlington, Virginia who run all of our programs and handle the day-to-day administration of the organization. We also invest in infrastructure, including phone systems, databases, a website and our office space. In the past couple of years, we have significantly enhanced the benefits available to members including Member Benefits, advocacy, community outreach and Online WorkshopsTop

What are the “membership dues”?

Membership dues are the fees that are paid for annual membership to Yoga Alliance. For current application, annual and upgrade costs, please visit the specific page for teachers, schools, and YACEPs. Top

Is my credit card information safe with Yoga Alliance?

Yes. When you make a payment through yogaalliance.org by credit card, we do not store your credit card number or security information on our servers. That sensitive data is sent directly to Sage Payment Solutions, our credit card processing company, which issues an authorization code for the payment. After the transaction is completed, the only information remaining on our servers connected to your account are the date and time the payment was processed, the authorization code, and the last four digits of your credit card number.
Many members have asked us about the possibility of establishing an auto-renewal process for the payment of annual dues. We may consider that possibility in the future, but it would require Yoga Alliance to store sensitive credit card information on our servers. If we ever decide to do that, we will inform our members and let them know the steps we are taking to safeguard their data. Top

I always paid by check in the past, is this still an option?

No. Our system does not accept checks, money orders, or payment by phone. However:

Do you accept payments via telephone or mail?

Yoga Alliance accepts registration and renewal payments solely through our online system. We are unable to process payments over the telephone or any sent via mail. Top

My costs seem different. Have they changed?

Some of our costs have changed. You can review the costs associated with the different designations on our website. You may also notice a difference due to a new date feature on our website. Registrants can now select the date which they would like to pay through, and the website will prorate the payment the correct amount. Top

I am from the United Kingdom and am required to key in a state to make a payment. What should I do?

Please select the "n/a" option and follow the prompts to submit your payment. Top

What is the Yoga Alliance Foundation? Why should I donate?

The Yoga Alliance Foundation supports and promotes education and research by securing grants and donations through engaging in charitable and education activities, supporting safe and high-quality professional training practices, and promoting the research of yoga, with an emphasis on training, education and raising awareness.

Donations are used for student scholarships, yoga education, research in the field of yoga, and building community. You can donate as little as $1.00 or as much as you wish. You can make your donation to the Yoga Alliance Foundation with each new registration or renewal. Your generous gift contributes greatly to the impact we make in the yoga community! The duration of a teacher training course varies from school to school—some schools do two week “intensives” for their programs, while some schedule their program every other weekend for six months. Top

How much does a teacher training program cost?

Tuition for yoga teacher training programs varies depending on the type of training, who’s teaching it, where it’s located and other resources involved (e.g., special guest faculty, provided materials, etc.) Some schools might even have scholarships or work study programs to help with the cost of tuition. Top

Does Yoga Alliance qualify as an accrediting agency to approve my RYS to receive awards?

No. Yoga Alliance does not meet the criteria outlined by the U.S. Department of Education to be an accrediting agency. Read more about Requirements for RYSs to Accept Title IV, GI Bill or AmeriCorps Awards. Top
