Do you accept applications from graduates of non-registered schools? Do you allow registration if the school was not registered when I completed my training, but is registered now?
To register with Yoga Alliance, you must complete a Registered Yoga School (RYS) 200 or 500-hour teacher training program. When you complete the training, you will be given a certificate to submit for registration. We do not accept applications from graduates of non-registered schools. I am trying to register / upgrade, but my RYS is not on the list. What should I do?
If you are unable to find the RYS where you completed your training when you register, please contact the school's Director of Teacher Training to confirm the following:
How long does it take for my RYS to confirm my program completion request?
Once you submit your program completion request, an email will be sent to your RYS to confirm that you have successfully completed their teacher training program. Most schools approve requests within two weeks. Once your school approves your training completion date, you will receive an email from Yoga Alliance inviting you to complete the registration process. (Be sure to check your email client's SPAM filter, or set your email preferences to allow all emails from the yogaalliance.org domain.) If your school does not acknowledge your program completion request within two weeks, it will be put in a queue to be reviewed by the YA credentialing team. Top

Are my responses to the evaluation of my RYS public?
Can I evaluate my RYS if I registered with Yoga Alliance prior to the launch of the new online system?
At this time there is no way for past trainee's to evaluate their RYSs if they registered with Yoga Alliance prior to the launch of the new website and registration system. We've only launched the first phase of our new site, so the option for past trainee's to complete an evaluation of their school may be made available in the future. In the meantime, trainees may state that they have completed training with their RYS in the abstract of their public profile on the directory listing. Top

Why is my email address not visible on the public directory?
In order to protect members from scam and spam issues, the Yoga Alliance directory listing does not make teacher emails visible on public profiles. Yoga Alliance is working to develop a method for members to be contacted via email through their profile, where the email address will not be viewable to the public until a reply email is sent from the member. In the meantime, if you would like to include your email address on your public profile, you can include it in the “My bio” section. Top

Enter Training Hours
How often should I submit teaching hours for upgrades?
You may enter teaching hours into your profile as frequently as you earn them. Some teachers prefer to update their profile after each class taught, and others log hours at the end of each week, month, quarter...etc. Whatever option you choose, the system will automatically notify you when you have entered enough hours to be eligible for an account upgrade. Top
How do I access my new RYS account?
The person who was listed as the main contact of your RYS will be able to access your RYS account using their email. Simply log in to your account (you may reset your password if you have forgotten it). From your RYS account, you can approve teacher trainees awaiting your confirmation in order to register with YA, update your profile, enter in your syllabus, add staff roles and more. Top
You can view information about the RYS designations here.
A RYS 300 (which must also hold a RYS 200) offers two separate segments of training, permitting trainees to receive certificates after the first 200 hours and again after the 300 hours of advanced training. (Trainees who complete both RYS 200 and RYS 300 programs can register as a RYT 500). By contrast, a RYS 500 offers 500 hours of training without permitting trainees to receive a certificate until they complete the full 500-hour training. RYS 300 programs may also allow trainees from another school to transfer.
For detailed information, please review the RYS 300 article here. Top
How do I approve a "Teacher Trainee Awaiting Confirmation"?
If you are listed as the owner of a Registered Yoga School (RYS), you now have a new and very important role. Effective immediately, it is now up to you to confirm with Yoga Alliance that your trainees completed your teacher training program. In fact, you may have already received a couple of “Teacher Trainee Awaiting Confirmation” messages from firstname.lastname@example.org.
Even if you haven’t held a teacher training program recently, some of your past trainees may now decide that this month is the time that they want to register with us. In order for them to register with Yoga Alliance, they will need you to take action and confirm their eligibility to become Registered Yoga Teachers.
If you are the owner AND an active RYT
If you are the RYS Owner and an active RYT yourself, then our new website may have linked your RYS and RYT accounts (only if the email address associated with your RYT account is identical to the email address associated with your RYS account). In this case, in order to access your account and confirm your trainees’ requests, follow these steps:
! Please do not confirm any trainees unless you are absolutely sure that the level of RYT they are applying for and the date of completion match your records for the training they completed with you.
If you are a RYT but the instructions above did not work for you, it may be that we have a different email address on file for your RYS. For example, if our email address on file for you as a teacher is email@example.com but your school is firstname.lastname@example.org, then your teacher and school accounts are not linked.
In this case, please use your RYS’s email address to log in (please note that RYSs with multiple locations should all be accessed using the same email address associated with the primary RYS location). You may reset your password if you have forgotten it; type in the email address associated with your school, and it will send an email with instructions for resetting your password. Then follow the steps above; clicking on “My Dashboard” will take you directly to your school dashboard.
If you do not remember what email address is associated with your RYS, please contact our customer service team by email or at 888-921-9642 to retrieve that information.
If you are the owner, but your RYT is inactive
If you are a RYT but you have not paid your annual renewal fee, then your account is inactive. Due to limitations in our current system that we plan to eventually fix, you will not be able to access your teacher or school profile and dashboard, or approve any of your trainees' requests for registration.
If you prefer not to renew your RYT, please contact us and we will help you gain access to your school profile.
If you choose to renew your RYT, you should then be able to proceed with the instructions above. Top
What if a trainee has outstanding requirements in order to complete the training when we receive the program completion request?
If a trainee has not met the requirements to complete the training for any reason, a yoga teacher training certificate should not be issued. However, if a trainee has been issued a certificate and they have any outstanding requirements when the program completion request is submitted, a RYS should reject the request and send a notification to the trainee with reasons for the rejection. The trainee may submit a new program completion request when they have met all the outstanding requirements of the RYS. Top
What does it mean to be the "owner" of a RYS?
Yoga Alliance defines a RYS owner as the person (or the representative within an entity) who has the legal signing authority for a school – i.e. with tax documents and banking institutions. Top
How do I change the "owner" of a RYS?
Please follow the appropriate instructions below:
Adding a new owner
Removing an owner
Due to YA’s wishes for enhanced security of your RYS account, owners can only remove themselves – they cannot remove other owners and other owners cannot remove them! To remove yourself (or an old or outdated email address that is assigned as an owner in your RYS account), you must log in with the owner’s login credentials.
Can I upload my syllabus?
It is possible for RYSs to enter in their syllabus. However, we are encouraging RYSs to wait until we have increased the stability of our website before attempting to enter in their syllabus. Please check back for further instructions. Top
When can I send in my RYS application?
Unfortunately, we are still having technical issues with the school application and syllabus entry process, and will not be able to open it to everyone until February at the earliest. Leave your name and email in the form below and we'll contact you when school registration is available.

How do I enter additional locations for a RYS?
What is the difference between a program and a track?
A track is a subset of a school designation for a RYS to register one or more training of the same designation type. For example, a RYS 200 can have one 200-hour track dedicated to teaching Hatha yoga or it may also add a separate 200-hour track, with a different syllabus, dedicated to Raja yoga. Each track includes a syllabus that outlines the content of the training and is reviewed by Yoga Alliance to ensure it meets our standards for registration. Each RYS has one track per designation and may add more tracks at any time.
Programs are specific courses when your track is conducted. For example, your track might be a 200-hour Vinyasa teacher training, but your program might be the “2013 Fall 200-hour Vinyasa Teacher Training”. Programs include a name, set of trainers, start date, end date, track, and location. In addition, RYSs add trainees to each program as part of the teacher registration process. Programs are set up after you have an approved track for your RYS. Top
Why does a RYS have to upload a sample certificate for each registered track?
Yoga Alliance must have a sample certificate on file for each registered training track in case YA staff need to review an applicant's completion request. While a RYS must approve or reject a program completion request, if they do not respond within 2 weeks, the YA credentialing team has the right to review the trainees request. If the signed teacher training certificate matches the sample certificate on file, the YA credentialing team will approve the request, taking the certificate as evidence that the applicant successfully completed the training. Top
What is required on the sample teacher training certificate that must be submitted to Yoga Alliance with a RYS application?
Each certificate should include the name of your school, the level of training conducted (i.e. 200 hour, 300 hour, 500 hour, Children’s, Prenatal), the printed names and handwritten signatures of the Lead Trainer(s), and blank spaces for the trainee’s name and training completion date to be written or typed in. You may also include your school logo. Once your school's application is approved, the appropriate RYS registry marks may also be added.
If your school chooses not to provide us with the email addresses of trainees, the trainee would create their own account, and then a message would be sent to the RYS asking you to confirm that this person completed training.
I've upgraded to E-RYT and was invited to evaluate my school. How do I do this?
If your upgrade was from RYT 200 to E-RYT 200, or if it was from RYT 500 to E-RYT 500, you will not be able to review your school’s program.
In our new system, reviews are initiated after a trainee completes a request for confirmation from their school. This function is currently just for new registrants or people who are upgrading to/adding RYT 500, RCYT, or RPYT to their designation. Top
How do I upgrade to RYT 500 from RYT 200?
Here's how to upgrade to RYT 500 online:
How do I upgrade to E-RYT 200 from RYT 200 or E-RYT 500 from RYT 500?
To register as an E-RYT 200, you must have a minimum of two years teaching experience and 1,000 teaching hours since graduating from a 200-hour RYS.
To register as an E-RYT 500, you must have a minimum of four years teaching experience and 1,500 teaching hours (100 for RYT 500 and 1,500 for E-RYT) since graduating from a 200-hour RYS and 500 teaching hours since graduating from a 500-hour RYS.
Is the grandfathering option still available for RCYT and RPYT?
Yes. For detailed information on grandfathering, please see the explanation here. Top
B. 250 hours of experience teaching children’s (or prenatal) yoga prior to December 31, 2010.
At this time, our system will only allow upgrades if the option B qualifications are met. We are working diligently to implement a fix so that option A upgrades are available soon. Please check back with our website at a later date for more information.
You can upgrade to RCYT or RPYT on your online account.
How do I apply to add an additional program to my RYS (a new teacher training track or designation)?
I'm having trouble finding myself in the public directory. Is something wrong?
In order to show up on the YA directory, your registration must be active, your profile must be published, and your location and name (either first, last, or spiritual) must be set to "public."
To publish your profile, log into your account, click the “My Profile” option on the orange menu to the left. Once you’re on the “Edit Profile” page, click the green “Publish” button located below your personal details.
You may update visibility preferences using the privacy settings in each section of your edit teacher profile page.
Please also understand the limitations of our directory search feature. Our new directory search is powered by Google, and as Google says, for a location to appear on an online map, “we must reserve a spot for it.” Thus, if you do a state-wide search for all RYTs or RYSs in Nebraska, Google will start looking from the spot it has determined to be the geographic center of the state of Nebraska, radiating outward up to 50 miles (the current limit in our “search near” parameters, which we are planning to increase for RYSs). Since Omaha, NE is located over 200 miles from the center of Nebraska, none of the RYSs in Omaha would appear in that search! While we work to resolve this issue, we recommend that you search by both the city and state (or city and province/territory) in which you hope to find a Registered Yoga School (e.g. “Omaha, NE” would yield a dozen search results). Top
How do I update my contact information and privacy settings for the directory?
To update your contact information and privacy settings that appear on the directory, log in to your account and click the "My Dashboard" link at the top right-hand corner of the screen. Select the "My Profile" link on the left naviation bar. This will take you to your "Edit Profile" page. Hover your mouse over the box where your contact information is listed and click the yellow "Edit" button to make changes. Scroll down to view and select your privacy settings. Be sure to click the green "save" button to keep your changes. .Top
How do I access member perks and benefits?

What does Yoga Alliance do with my fees?
Your annual fees keep our organization running. We have over 45,000 Registered Yoga Teachers and 3,000 Registered Yoga Schools as members, and the support and administration of such a large community requires significant effort and resources. We have 24 full-time staff members in an Arlington, Va. office who run all of our programs and handle the day-to-day administration of the organization. Along with staff, we invest in infrastructure to support you, including phone systems, databases, a website, and our office space. In the past couple of years, we have significantly enhanced the benefits available to members, launching an annual conference, member perks, online workshops and a new website. Learn more about the widespread transformation of our organization that we call the Next Generation of Yoga Alliance.
Although our 2014 financials aren’t complete yet, we project that the organization collected approximately $4 million in total revenue in 2013. That makes Yoga Alliance a fairly average-sized nonprofit membership association for the Washington, D.C. area, according to data from the American Society of Association Executives. However, that level of revenue is extremely low for an organization with almost 50,000 members. Here’s is how that money was spent (these are rough figures that will be updated when our 2013 financials are complete):
Payroll and Benefits – 39%
Annual Conference – 5%
Website/IT Expenses – 9.5%
Rent and Occupancy Fees – 4%
Consulting Services – 5%
Legal Fees – 4.5%
Office Expenses (e.g., supplies, bank fees, postage, phone) –
Marketing and Communications –
Board and Committee Expenses* –
Online Workshops – 2.5%
Other General and Admin Expenses – 2.5%
(*Board and committee members are volunteers who are not paid any fees or salary. These expenses are primarily for room, board and travel associated with meeting attendance.)
We ended the year with net ordinary income of approximately 17%. After interest, depreciation and other non-cash flow expenses, our net surplus will be near 12%. In 2013, our surplus was devoted to pay the capital expenditures required to build our new website.
You can also review our audited financial reports from 2005 to 2012, to see how Yoga Alliance collected and spent funds in previous years. Top
What is the “membership assessment”?
You may have noticed that your fees paid to Yoga Alliance are now broken down into two parts: one portion is a “Yoga Alliance Registry Fee” and the other is a “Membership Assessment.” This is simply our way of accounting for the work and resources required to run our two organizations. The reason we founded a second organization, in 2011, was to deliver many of the services and benefits our members wanted, such as liability and health insurance, and issue advocacy. Under Yoga Alliance’s original charter (as a 501(c)3 public charity), we were limited in the range of activities we could perform. With the addition of a new organization (a 501(c)6 trade association), we’ve been able to provide many new services to members. For simplicity, we operate these two organizations under the same roof and maintain one point of contact for you to connect with us. The separation of these fees in your invoice is simply a necessary accounting measure that is required by Internal Revenue Service rules so we can properly allocate our resources amongst the two organizations that work jointly to serve you. Top
Is my credit card information safe with Yoga Alliance?
Yes, it is.
When you make a payment through yogaalliance.org by credit card, we do not store your credit card number or security information on our servers. That sensitive data is sent directly to Sage Payment Solutions, our credit card processing company, which issues an authorization code for the payment. After the transaction is completed, the only information remaining on our servers that is connected to your account are the date and time the payment was processed, the authorization code, and the last four digits of your credit card number.
Many members have asked us about the possibility of establishing an auto-renewal process for the payment of annual fees. We may consider that possibility in the future, but it would require Yoga Alliance to store sensitive credit card information on our servers. If we ever decide to do that, we will inform our members and let them know the steps we are taking to safeguard their data. Top
I always paid by check in the past, is this still an option?
At present, our system does not accept checks, money orders, or payment by phone. We’re sorry for the inconvenience, but there are some workarounds that could assist you in paying online if you do not have a credit card.
Do you accept payments via telephone or mail?
Yoga Alliance accepts registration and renewal payments solely through our online system. We are unable to process payments over the telephone or any sent via mail.
My fees seem different. Have they changed?
Some of our fees have changed. You can review the fees associated with the different designations on our website here.
You may also notice a difference due to a new date feature on our website.
Registrants can now select the date which they would like to pay through, and the website will prorate the payment the correct amount. Top

You may also try using a different browser or device. While our developers are working to ensure that all browsers and devices work well with the site, we have found that Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox are often the most reliable browsers for the current system. Trying a different device may assist those who have apps, anti-virus programs, or other software that can cause uploads to be blocked. Top
