Help With Updating Your Profile
Last Updated: July 11, 2016
Overall, words that relate to general wellness or improving health, even in already healthy people, are permissible. Words that suggest that yoga techniques can treat or improve specific health conditions are subject to the policy. Similarly, words that suggest training or skill in diagnosing health conditions are also subject to the policy. Under the policy, these kinds of “medical” words are not permitted on your Yoga Alliance profile or the YACEP directory.
Depending on what designation you have, there are some slight differences regarding the language you can use. Please read below for details. If you need assistance at any point, please call our Member Services team at 1-888-921-9642.
Teachers are not allowed to use any of the restricted words in your Yoga Alliance profile. However, you can use the restricted words in your own marketing materials (e.g. on your external website) but only if you have another credential to support your therapy claim and you use the disclaimer that is listed below.
Disclaimer for a Teacher:
The disclaimer you include must identify the basis for your qualification to treat or diagnose health conditions.
“The yoga therapy components of my teaching are based on my [non-YA credential or other qualification], not derived from my status as an [RYT/E-RYT] with Yoga Alliance.”
As with teachers, schools cannot use the restricted words in your Yoga Alliance directory profile, but there is one exception. For schools with a legal name that includes a “yoga therapy” type term, you may use your legal name on your profile if you also include the disclaimer below. You can also use the restricted words in your own marketing materials (e.g. your external website) but only if you have another credential to support your therapy claims and you include the following disclaimer on all external materials.
Disclaimer for a School:
“The yoga therapy components of our [courses/training] are based on our [non-YA credential or other qualification], not derived from our RYS status with Yoga Alliance."
All programs and courses offered by YACEPs must fit into one of our educational categories, which do not include yoga therapy. As such, a YACEP cannot use any restricted words in content that will be displayed on their YACEP profile. Because YACEP courses must fit our educational categories, there is no option for a YACEP to use a disclaimer as our educational categories do not include any yoga therapy training.
More About the Disclaimer for RYTs and RYSs
The disclaimer can reference another formal credential (e.g., a school’s accreditation with another organization), or it can describe some other form of qualification. For example, an RYT could list their past study with a specific teacher, experience teaching yoga classes in a retirement home based on exercise plans developed by a doctor or any other experience, credential or qualification that serves as the basis for the RYT’s description of her classes as including a yoga therapy component. The disclaimer serves two purposes: (1) it informs prospective students or trainees of the basis for the teacher’s or school’s yoga therapy qualifications, and (2) it makes clear that registration with Yoga Alliance does not provide a qualification in yoga therapy techniques.
What Exactly Are the Words I Can/Cannot Use?
To help you make any necessary changes, we have created a list of words that are restricted under the Policy and some suggested alternatives that you can use. When you log in to your profile, our system will highlight any words that need to change to make the process a little easier for you. These lists will also be updated if we find any more problematic words or receive any helpful alternatives from our community.
If you are unable to add a word that you think is not therapy related and/or want to suggest another word to allow, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
