Yoga teacher, and passionate yin yogi. From Claire’s very first encounter with yoga, she was hooked.
She fell in love with the pure raw potential of the practice: the contrast between the strength and power of a yang practice compared to the grace and surrender within a yin practice and enjoys the beautiful flow between the two extremes.
Claire is passionate how yoga empowers people in the process. Rather, than being a passive recipient of treatment, the student is actively engaged in the path to their own well-being.
Her role, as a teacher, is to guide you to listen and be present to your own subtle messages your body offers and directing you to the tools to connect and re-balance; teaching you the way to implement these tools.
Claire started practicing yoga 20 years ago following having sciatica and pelvic pain. Also suffering from anxiety and a high alert state as a young adult, self medication in numerous ways was a habitual pattern. Rather than take pain killers for the sciatica, yoga entered her life after stumbling across a yoga video at a yard sale.
Initially, due to the social anxiety it was very much a personal self taught practice not entering a class for two years. Organically submerging into Yin Yoga in particular turned Claire’s life around, over coming the many layers and attributes of social anxiety and dealing with associated physical pain and in-balance, and reconnecting with herself as well as with others. As a highly sensitive child yoga enabled a tapping into skills to help others rather than feeling dis-connected with the world.
A grateful student of her vastly knowledgeable teachers, Claire teaches a fusion of the styles that she has studied with a strong emphasis on using the whole body, and the breath to develop strength, essential for a Yang practice and the sacred balance of effort and surrender in the Yin practice. Her classes find equal emphasis on strength building of the mind, body and soul, as well as graceful acceptance hence how she found her name akirayoga – akira is sanskrit for graceful strength.
Claire has over 2000 hours of teacher training and 18 years of teaching experience; initially completing the 100 hours British Wheel of Yoga (BWY) Foundation course. She gained the 500 hours Teaching Yoga Diploma with the BWY in 2005, and completed level one Birthlight Pregnancy Yoga in 2009. In 2011 she gained the BWY Foundation Course Teacher Trainer certification and began to deliver the British Wheel of Yoga Foundation course based on the Hatha yoga tradition.
In 2014 Claire completed Forrest Yoga Advanced Yoga training and in 2015 a further 570 hours Yin Yoga and wellness following the Krishnamacharya tradition with Maggie Reagh, continuing these studies in Chennai, India, with teachers D.V. Sridhar, Viji Vasu, and Radha Sridhar at Yoga Raksanam. In 2019, completing a further 200 hours Yin Yoga teacher training with Jo Phee & Joe Barnett.
Claire provides Chakra wellness retreats, 55 & 100 hour Yin Yoga Yoga Alliance continuing education teacher training courses and 200 hour Vinyasa and Yin Yoga Yoga Alliance teacher trainings, 15 and 30 hour Yin yoga online courses and Yin yoga online class packages.
