About Laurel Hicks, PhD, LCSW, ERYT

Laurel, the founder and owner of Mindful MamasTM, is known for being a soothing and skilled yoga teacher as well as for her warm, gentle and compassionate approach to helping students of all abilities enjoy being in their bodies.

She is very passionate in helping pregnant and postpartum women find peace in their body and mind through the practice of yoga and mindfulness. She holds dual-title PhD in Social Work (Clinical concentration) and Infant Mental Health and researches the effects of stress during pregnancy on the entire family (parents and infant) and how mindfulness and yoga may improve wellbeing, especially in the face of adversity. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher at University of Denver and is studying the effects of prenatal depression on infant development. She is an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT 200), a Registered Prenatal Yoga Teacher (RPYT) and Continuing Education Provider (YACEP) with Yoga Alliance. She holds a Clinical Social Work License (LCSW / MSW, RSW) and has taught hundreds of women yoga during pregnancy as well as postnatally. In 2011, Laurel began teaching yoga teachers how to teach prenatal yoga classes safely and effectively through her Yoga Alliance registered prenatal yoga teacher training program. Lastly, she is a Certified Labour Doula (CLD) and assists women birth their babies by providing emotional, mental and physical support. She believes and has witnessed the benefits of prenatal yoga on the outcome of labour and has found that her students have a great ability to focus, relax, and use effective breathing during the birth of their baby.

Laurel blends her experience as a psychotherapist and yoga teacher to offer trauma-informed yoga in many contexts. She has taught in juvenile detention centers, domestic violence shelters and has offered yoga and mindfulness to low-income, adolescents and expectant parents living in Detroit. She is further trained in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR: trained with Susan Woods and Char Wilkens), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive (MBCT: trained by Zindel Segal and Susan Woods), and completed the professional introduction training in Mindfulness-Based Childbirth and Parenting Education with Nancy Bardacke, and Larissa Duncan.
