About Dr. Jeremy David Engels

Dr. Jeremy David Engels (www.jdengels.com) has a Doctorate of Philosophy in Rhetoric from the University of Illinois.  He teaches classes in rhetoric, deliberation, ethics, and philosophy--especially yogic philosophy and mindful communication--at Penn State University, where he is the Sherwin Early Career Professor of Ethics. He is the author of The Art of Gratitude, forthcoming from SUNY Press in early 2018, a book that draws on yoga philosophy, especially Patanjali's practice of santosha, to enrich and deepen our current practices of gratitude in the United States. He is currently working on a book titled American Yoga: A History of Spiritual Democracy, a book that investigates the history of yoga philosophy in the early United States. He is one of the co-founders and co-owners of Yoga Lab studio in State College, PA, where he teaches a regular class called "Philosophy in Practice." He also teaches a number of workshops with his wife, Anna Sunderland Engels, including Introduction to Yoga, Partner Yoga, "Bring Your Dudes," Introduction to Chanting, and Introduction to Yoga Philosophy.  He is developing proficiency in Sanskrit (having studied ancient Greek and Latin). He has trained extensively with Lara Heimann, the founder of Yoga Stream, and aims to teach a yoga that is grounded in a deep understanding of functional movement and anatomy and that is enriched by the yoga philosophy of the Bhagavad Gita.
