Balance at Work helps relieve stress in your body and mind. I offer workplace wellness services, and I support clients living with mental health challenges.
** I am actively seeking more work in both of these areas.
I offer practical workshops, educational presentations, wellness programming, and yoga sessions as part of employee wellness programming.
Former & current clients include Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources & Forestry, Ontario Parks, SGS Canada, RBC, Peterborough GreenUP, the Otonabee Region Conservation Authority, Wild Rock Outfitters, The Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce, Peterborough Utilities Commission, and the Community Counselling & Resource Centre.
SUPPORTING MENTAL HEALTH
I lead 2 yoga & meditation sessions/week to support Canadian Mental Health Association (Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge) clients with dual diagnoses to build physical literacy and facilitate anxiety management (Feb. 2017-present).
I lead 2 yoga & meditation sessions/week to support recovery at the Canadian Health Recovery Centre, an all-male, residential drug and alcohol addiction facility (Dec. 2017-present).
I lead weekly Chair Yoga sessions for Array Services, whose clients have developmental disabilities and are deaf or hard of hearing (Oct. 2019-present)..
I offer private, semi-private, and customized small-group retreats and yoga classes.
I also offer public classes and workshops and teach several styles of hot yoga at the Peterborough Yoga Wellness Centre.
In all cases, I offer a calm, supportive manner that helps students feel comfortable with me, with themselves, and with their practice. Yoga has helped me physically and emotionally over the years, and I want to share its benefits with as many people as I can.
HOW I CAME TO YOGA
I began my career after 10 years of post-secondary education in ecology as a field ornithologist, studying birds across Ontario, and in Alberta, Manitoba, and California. As a scientist, I published two scientific papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals and wrote numerous reports for the government.
I somehow ended up working in a high-stress provincial government office for several years, where I was a planning biologist, a habitat biologist, a project coordinator, and a policy analyst. I know the physical challenges associated with stress and prolonged sitting well and now use my strong scientific skills to support the development of yoga sessions and workshops tailored to addressing those challenges. I also have a certificate in Creative Writing, have one short story published in a Canadian literary magazine, and have edited four books.
I want to help, and I love teaching. In addition to yoga, I’ve taught extensively across a range of disciplines for 20 years, including as a university-level teaching assistant and lecturer, teaching English as a second language in Japan for two years, and teaching community-level bird watching courses.
