Overall Implementation Timeline
The standards shift begins with the foundational teacher training program, the RYS 200, as our most widely-held school credential that develops our most widely-held teaching credential, the RYT 200. Our intention was and will continue to be purposeful as we move at a measured pace, with as little disruption as possible to the livelihoods of our member schools and teachers.
Current RYS 200 programs will have more than 24 months to upgrade to the enhanced RYS 200 standards, beginning February 2020 and by December 31, 2021. New RYS 200 applicants will apply under the new standards beginning February 2020.

By February 2022, all Yoga Alliance schools – RYS 200s, 300s, and 500s – will be operating under new, updated standards.
How do we get there?
We start with today. June 2019, we introduced new standards for our RYS 200 foundational yoga teacher training program. New applicants for this credential will apply under these standards beginning February 2020. Current schools must renew under these standards no later than December 31, 2021.
Next summer, we will announce our new standards for our professional yoga teacher training programs, the RYS 300 and RYS 500. New applicants for these credentials will begin applying under these new standards in February 2021, while current schools will renew under the new standards no later than December 31, 2021.
In addition, all Registered Yoga Teachers, regardless of credential level, regardless of whether new or renewing, will agree to a shared Scope of Practice and Code of Conduct and will take an online course on equity in yoga as part of a universal ethical commitment by all Yoga Alliance members. This will become effective February 2020.
RYS 300 & RYS 500
Yoga Alliance will announce new standards for the professional teacher training programs, the RYS 300 and RYS 500, next summer. New applicants will apply under the new standards in February 2021 with current RYS 300 and RYS 500 renewing under the new standards by December 31, 2021.
By February 2022, all Yoga Alliance schools – RYS 200s, RYS 300s, and RYS 500s – will be operating under significantly up-leveled standards that underlay their credentials, including the enhanced Lead Trainer requirements.
Yoga Alliance will commit to a process of continuous improvement and community collaboration in service to the membership and yoga community for years to come. We will evaluate the needs for future credentials such as one for more experienced senior teachers or for additional specialty areas.
Beginning in February 2020, new and renewing RYTs will be asked to agree and adhere to a shared ethical commitment that includes a Scope of Practice, a Code of Conduct, and a responsibility to equity in yoga as part of their Yoga Alliance membership and in order to receive their RYT credentials. Yoga Alliance will create tools and resources to support this commitment, including an online course on equity in yoga to unify members around an awareness of and responsibility to increasing equity in yoga.
