The Gift of Yoga Scholarship

The Yoga Alliance Foundation wants to help our RYTs share the gift of yoga with underserved communities. This year, we will give two RYT 200s a scholarship of $2,225 to attend a RYS 300 training in 2014. The recipients must demonstrate a commitment to bringing yoga to underserved communities and be an active RYT 200.

Applications are due December 2 at 12:00 p.m. EST.  The application deadline for this scholarship has passed.

Eligibility

Applicants must:
  • Be an active RYT 200
  • Enroll in and complete a RYS 300 program by June 2015
  • Demonstrate the need for financial assistance.  The family income for 2012 must be no more than 2.5 times above the federal poverty level, as defined by the Department of Health and Human Services.
  • Teach yoga to underserved populations, including (but not limited to):
    • Homeless shelters
    • Communities with a high poverty level
    • Residents of military bases
    • Inmates at jails
    • Residents of recovery and treatment facilities
    • People with a low socioeconomic status
    • Elderly and seniors
    • Children or teens
    • Veterans
    • People with disabilities
  • Demonstrate leadership within the yoga community
  • Demonstrate continued study of yoga 

How to Apply

To apply for The Gift of Yoga Scholarship, please submit a completed application (pdf) with all corresponding attachments, as described in the application:
  • Essay (750-1000 words)
  • Income eligibility documentation
  • Yoga resume or CV
  • Letters of reference (three required)

Submission Policies


  • Members residing in all countries may apply.  The application and required materials must be submitted in English or they will not be reviewed.
  • Applications and supporting materials will not be returned to the applicant.       
  • Applicants will receive an email to confirm that their application has been received.
  • Applicants will be notified as soon as possible after a determination on their application has been made.
  • Two scholarship recipients will be selected and each will receive a $2,225 credit to use towards tuition for a RYS 300. Award recipients must enroll in and complete a RYS 300 training program AND upgrade to RYT 500 by June 2015.  Award monies will not be distributed until recipient has upgraded to RYT 500 and will be paid by Yoga Alliance directly to the RYS 300 (If it’s helpful, we can provide a memo of understanding to the RYS).
  • Award monies will be issued in U.S. dollars only.  Monies awarded to recipients residing outside of the U.S. are not subject to conversion rates. 
  • Two (2) award recipients will be notified by December 31, 2013.

 

Review Process

A review team comprised of Yoga Alliance staff, members and peers will conduct a blind review of all applications (name and contact information will be removed by a staff member). The team will review the applications and select two applicants that both meet the eligibility criteria outlined above and that best demonstrate:
  • Seva, or service, providing yoga to underserved communities
  • Leadership within the yoga community
  • Continued study of yoga

Longevity as a member will also be considered in selecting scholarship recipients.
