Yoga Alliance and Yoga Alliance Foundation Board of Directors Role Description (Volunteer)

Yoga Alliance (YA) is a global, non-profit membership organization with a mission to advance the evolving profession of yoga teaching and broader connected community of students, individuals, and businesses by supporting the professional growth and development of yoga schools and teachers. Its related public charity, the Yoga Alliance Foundation, is an emerging field leader with a mission to leverage yoga for social impact, and foster an expansive, accessible, and equitable yoga community.

Together, these two organizations support yoga professionals to grow into their role more fully as leaders in their communities with a shared vision in which our collective wellbeing and human consciousness is elevated through equitable access to high-quality teaching and practice of yoga.

We are currently receiving nominations for seven Board of Directors positions. These Directors will serve on the Yoga Alliance and/or Yoga Alliance Foundation governing bodies after a selection process led by Yoga Alliance and Yoga Alliance Foundation President and Chief Executive Officer, the Board Chair of Yoga Alliance and Yoga Alliance Foundation, the Governance Committee Chair, and supported by the Governance Committee.

Nominations should be submitted here: yogaalliance.org/BODnomination.

Under the organizations’ bylaws, board meetings are held quarterly each year, with the March and September meetings traditionally held in the Washington, DC metro area. Currently, we are recruiting for seven seats and these terms will begin January 1, 2023. As an all-volunteer governing Board, membership requires a time commitment including attendance at each quarterly Board meeting, service on a Board committee, and work assignments in-between.

If you, or someone you know, are interested in serving on the Yoga Alliance or Yoga Alliance Foundation Boards, we would welcome your nomination. We are intentionally working to ensure that we have a pool of candidates that represent a diverse set of skillsets, backgrounds, and lived experiences. The board member's responsibilities include, but are not limited to, advising on strategic plans, participating in meetings and committees, and monitoring the financial stewardship of both organizations. First and foremost, candidates should be able to demonstrate a passion for yoga and a commitment to the shared vision of Yoga Alliance and Yoga Alliance Foundation. Board members are not required to have the Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) and/or Registered Yoga School (RYS) credential.

We take every nomination seriously, and we appreciate the time put into the nomination and the nomination process. Due to the limited number of Board positions available and the expected volume of nominations, we are unable to guarantee an interview for every applicant. However, we will review all nominations and keep nominators periodically updated about the process.

We are grateful to those willing to volunteer their time and experience to help ensure safe, accessible, and equitable yoga practices are available to all who wish to practice. The committee’s slate will be announced publicly by December 31, 2022.
