This collection of research reprints in this category includes research done on normal healthy individuals. The goals of this research are to elucidate and quantify the benefits of yoga practices and the underlying biological and psychological mechanisms responsible for these benefits. This is considered very important research because scientists and policy makers have a need to understand the mechanisms by which these practices are acting, in addition to the research that shows their efficacy.

Physical/physiological functioning and mechanism at the gross physical, behavioral, and performance level. Includes research in the fields of: neuromuscular functioning, cardiovascular functioning, neuroendocrine functioning, respiratory functioning including pranayama research, physical balance and coordination, sleep, and sports performance.

Cognitive and Emotional Functioning

Cognitive and Emotional Functioning

Psychological functioning and mechanism, specifically at the level of mental, cognitive and emotional functioning and performance. Research fields include cognitive performance, awareness/mindfulness/interoception, stress regulation, emotion regulation, and metacognition.

Wellness and Disease Prevention

Wellness and Disease Prevention

Efficacy of yoga practices in changing behaviors, risk factors, and psychological and physiological characteristics relevant to health and disease and its prevention. Studies include effects of yoga interventions, characteristics of long-term practitioners, research relevant to yoga and disease prevention, disease risk factors, health-related behaviors, wellness, quality of life, and long-term practitioner health.

Transcendence/Spirituality

Transcendence / Spirituality

Effects of yoga practices in generating and enhancing deeper psychological experiences, altered states of consciousness and positive psychology. Studies include effects of yoga interventions and characteristics of long-term practitioners, including research areas of: spirituality, transcendence, flow state, life purpose and meaning, values, life satisfaction, and transformation.

Yoga in Society

Yoga in Society

Yoga practice as it is manifested in society and culture, including characteristics and prevalence of practice and epidemiological characteristics. Primarily survey studies in the general population and in specific yoga practicing populations, this area of research includes prevalence of practice, demographics, reasons for practice, barriers to practice, practice frequency, styles of yoga, adverse events, and public and practitioner perceptions of yoga.
