2013 Financial Report for Yoga Alliance and Yoga Alliance Registry

October 15, 2014

Yoga Alliance® and Yoga Alliance Registry have released their combined 2013 financials by posting them on this website. The documents posted include both Form 990s that were filed with the IRS on behalf of each organization, and their independently audited combined financial statements. The audit was conducted by Gelman, Rosenberg & Freedman, Certified Public Accountants.

Revenue for the organizations in 2013 was approximately $3.9 million, which represents a 15 percent increase over the $3.37 million generated in 2012. The combined organizations ended the year with a surplus of $383,902, which is down from $1.05 million in 2012.

According to the financial statements, the not-for-profit organizations also had approximately $3.5 million in total assets as of Dec. 31, 2013, including about $2.13 million in cash and short-term investments.

“Yoga Alliance and Yoga Alliance Registry continued to grow in 2013, as did the volume of benefits and programming we provided to members,” said President Richard Karpel. “Most significantly, we developed a new website and association management system in 2013, which allowed us to launch our new Social Credentialing system late in the year, Social Credentialing adds transparency and accountability to our registry, which enhances the public credibility of our Registered Yoga Teachers, Registered Yoga Schools, and the international yoga community.”

The new association management system and website provides each member with an enhanced online account, significantly increases the efficiency of the registration application process and enables members to build online profiles for the Directory. It also allows better access for members-only resources like Online Workshops and instructional videos.

Yoga Alliance also took a lead advocacy role for several yoga-related issues in 2013. That included supporting the right of the Encinitas Union School District to offer optional after-school yoga to students; opposing YogaGlo’s patent for a system and method of recording online yoga classes; and opposing Bikram Choudhury’s attempt to obtain a copyright for an asana sequence.

Detailed 2013 financial statements are posted on the website as PDFs. Members with questions about our financials can send an email to info@yogaalliance.org, with the subject line "Financials", and a Yoga Alliance staffer will respond.
